*世界の共通言語は英語ではなく笑顔である
高橋優というシンガーソングライターの「福笑い」という曲がある。私は子供が小学校の学芸会で歌っていたのをきっかけにこの曲が好きになった。特に「この世界の共通言語は英語じゃなくて笑顔だと思う」という部分は、私のこれまでの旅の経験からも共感をするところがあったので少し書いてみたい。
大学院留学時代の春休みに私はドイツのフュッセンという街を訪れた。フュッセンの近郊にはディズニーのシンデレラ城のモチーフとなったノイシュバンシュタイン城がある。ただ、フュッセンの街自体は人口1万人程度の小さな街なので、市内の見所は徒歩で回ることが出来る。夕食までの間に私はガイドブックに載っていた教会に行こうと思い歩いていたが、中々辿り着けずに道に迷ってしまった。小さな街なので人もいなくて困っていると、1人だけドイツ人のお婆さんが歩いていた。
私はお婆さんに、日本語の「地球の歩き方」で写真を見せながら、英語で道を教えて欲しいと伝えると、お婆さんはドイツ語とジェスチャーで道を教えてくれた。全て違う言語だが何となく通じ合えて、お互い笑顔になった。今は翻訳アプリがあるのでこのようなことにはならないかもしれない。しかし、言葉以前の問題として、スマホの画面ではなく、目の前の相手に向き合って一期一会を楽しむことは旅の醍醐味でもあると思うので、技術の進歩に少し寂しさを感じてしまうのは私だけだろうか。
*The Universal Language is Not English, but a Smile
There is a song by the singer-songwriter Yu Takahashi called "Fukuwarai." I came to love this song after hearing my child sing it at a school recital. In particular, the line “I think the universal language of this world is not English, but a smile” resonated with me deeply, reflecting my travel experiences.
During my spring break in graduate school, I visited Füssen, Germany. Near Füssen is Neuschwanstein Castle, the inspiration for Disney's Cinderella Castle. The town itself is small, with a population of about 10,000, and its sights are easily explored on foot. As I wandered, trying to find a church listed in my guidebook, I got lost. The streets were empty, but I eventually saw an elderly German woman. Showing her a picture from my Japanese guidebook, I asked for directions in English. She guided me using German and gestures, and despite the language barrier, we understood each other and smiled. While translation apps may prevent such moments today, facing people directly and savoring the fleeting encounters of travel is something I cherish, making me a bit nostalgic for the simplicity of past travels.
