京都の物価はかなり高く、ここで豊かに暮らすにはかなりの資産が必要になる。観光業で働く人達の賃金を考えると働く人達の給与と物価は見合っていない。この状態を見て私が思い浮かんだのはハワイだ。ハワイもメインの産業は観光業で、リゾート地なので物価も高い。穿った見方かもしれないが、豊かな観光客のために低賃金で奉仕する人々という構図に見えていた。京都との違いは、ハワイは海外や米国本土からの観光客だけなのに対し、京都の場合は近隣の日本人の旅行先でもあるという点だ。同じ報酬水準で働く日本人旅行者には、中々厳しい物価水準である。京都は外国人にとってはとてもエキゾチックで魅力的な場所なので、日本の円安が続く限り、暫くこの構図は変わらないだろう。外国人観光客がいないとその街で暮らす人々の生活は成り立たないが、それ故にその街の生活水準で豊かに暮らすことは難しい。日本の観光地でこれから起こるであろうこのジレンマをどのように解決していけば良いのだろうか。京都の旅は楽しかったが、未来を憂い少し切ない気持ちにもなった。

My wife and I took a day trip to Kyoto to celebrate our wedding anniversary. After 21 years of marriage, I feel incredibly fortunate that we can still travel together and enjoy each other's company.
It had been a while since my last visit to Kyoto, and even on a weekday in May, the city was crowded with school groups and international tourists. The weak Japanese yen has made Japan an attractive destination for overseas visitors. Many tourists were dressed in rented kimonos, and although prices at popular attractions were noticeably high, people seemed happy to shop and explore.
What struck me, however, was the gap between Kyoto’s high cost of living and the wages earned by many people working in the tourism industry. It reminded me of Hawaii, another destination where tourism drives the economy and living costs are extremely high. Perhaps it is a cynical view, but both places can appear to rely on lower-paid workers serving wealthier visitors.
The difference is that Kyoto is also a destination for ordinary Japanese travelers. For many domestic tourists earning typical Japanese salaries, these prices can be difficult to justify. As long as the yen remains weak, Kyoto’s appeal to foreign visitors is unlikely to fade.
Tourism sustains the local economy, yet it can also make it difficult for residents to enjoy a comfortable standard of living. I left Kyoto with wonderful memories, but also with a sense of concern about the future and the challenges that many tourist cities may soon face.
