春は桜の季節である。桜を見ると日本人で良かったと思うのは私だけではないだろう。桜の名所は至る所にあるが、実は私が見た一番美しい桜は日本ではない。イギリスだ。
私は20代の頃にイギリスの大学院に留学をした。イギリスの大学院では春は期末試験の時期で、単位を落とす訳にはいかないので、私も必死に勉強をした。そんな時、大学の音楽学部の校舎の前に一本の桜を見つけた。桜の花は見頃を迎えていて満開だった。日本だと桜の木の下は人が沢山いるが、ここはイギリス。花見をしている人は誰もいない。そこで天気も良く暖かかったので、私は教科書を持ってきて、桜の木の下で一人で試験勉強をすることにした。遥か異国の満開の桜の木の下で、桜を独り占めしながら英語の専門書を読み漁る。何とも不思議な光景だがとても贅沢な時間だった。思い出の部分もあるとは思うが、あの時の桜を超える桜にはまだ出会ってはいない。あれから20年以上経つが、まだあの桜は咲いているだろうか。願わくばいつかまたあの満開の桜を見たい。

Spring is the season of cherry blossoms. Surely, I am not the only one who feels grateful to be Japanese when seeing them in bloom. While famous cherry blossom spots can be found all across Japan, the most beautiful blossoms I have ever seen were not in my home country, but in the United Kingdom.
In my twenties, I studied at a graduate school in the UK. Spring there coincided with final exams, and determined not to fail, I studied intensely. One day, I discovered a single cherry tree in full bloom in front of the university’s music building. Unlike Japan, where crowds gather beneath the blossoms, there was no one there. The weather was warm and pleasant, so I brought my textbooks and studied alone under the tree.
Reading English textbooks while enjoying the blossoms in a distant land felt surreal, yet deeply luxurious. Perhaps nostalgia plays a part, but I have yet to encounter cherry blossoms more beautiful than those. Even after more than twenty years, I wonder if that tree still blooms—and hope to see it again someday.

私はツアーではなく個人旅行で色々な国を旅をした。バックパッカー的な旅ではあったが、ガチ勢のように最安を目指すのではなく、適度な安さと安全、効率を求めるスタイルだった。カンボジアを訪れようと思った時も、当時はまだ観光地として発展しておらず少し怖いイメージがあり、現地に着いてから自力で全て行うのは不安があった。そこで調べてみるとガイドと車を一日雇って回る方法があることがわかったのて、日本からネットで手配をしていくことにした。日本語を話せるガイドは少なく値段も高いので英語のガイドを選んだが、車とガイドを雇っても1日2万円位だったので、物凄く高いという程でもなかった。ただ、実際に行ってみるとその選択は大正解だった。アンコール遺跡群は広く遺跡が点在していて徒歩では回れないし、バスなどの公共交通機関もない。結構不便に回っているバックパッカーを横目に私は車で目的地へガイドと直行だ。お陰で限られた日数ながらも多くの寺院を訪れることができた。色々な旅のスタイルはあるが、現地の雰囲気や異国情緒を感じながら効率的に旅をするなら、不便な地域では現地ガイドを雇うのも一つの選択肢だと思う。

While I saw other backpackers struggling with transportation, I was able to travel efficiently by car with my guide and visit many temples in a limited time. There are many ways to travel, but in less convenient regions, hiring a local guide can be a smart option if you want to experience the local atmosphere while traveling efficiently.

世界では自らの行動は自己責任という考え方が一般的だ。日本のように安全柵などもなく危険そうな場所も多いが、それは自分で判断しなさいということ。規制をしていない＝安全、ということではない点は注意が必要だ。
さて、私がアンコールワットを訪れた時、調べると中央祠堂の上から見る夕陽が美しいということだったので、そこから夕陽を見ようと思った。ただ、行ってみるとそこは非常に急な階段になっていた。手すりも何もなかったので、どうやって登るのだろう？と様子を見ていると、皆、手を使い這って登っていた。少し迷ったが、まだ私も20代で若く元気だったので、皆に習って這って登ることにした。そして、上に着くと既に大勢の人が居て、そこから見た夕陽は確かに美しかった。ちなみに今では手すりと階段が設置されているようで、怪我をする人もいたのだろう。今になって思うとちょっと危険だったかもしれないと反省をしている。

アンコールワットは12世紀に建築されたヒンドゥー教最大の寺院である。密林の中、南北1.3km、東西1.5kmという広大な敷地を持ち、その中心に高さ65mの巨大な中央祠堂が立っている。周囲は堀に囲まれており、500m程の参道を抜けた後に突如眼前に現れる中央祠堂は確かに圧巻だった。写真でもアンコールワットと言えば中央祠堂などの遠景がよく使われている。勿論それも美しいが、実は寺院の壁や回廊にあるレリーフも大きな見所だ。クメール芸術の最高傑作と言われており、ラーマーヤナやマハーバーラタなどの神話のシーンが描かれている。私も実際にその場を訪れたが、至る所にに女神のレリーフが彫られていてその数と美しさに驚愕をした。細部の美しさはダイジェスト的な写真や動画では中々伝わらないので、その場所を実際に訪れて初めて理解できる美しさがあるのではないかと私は思う。

私は20代の時、仕事の夏休みにカンボジアを訪れた。アンコールワットをどうしても見たかったからだが、私がアンコールワットに興味を持ったのは大学時代のある出逢いがきっかけだった。私は英語系のサークルに入っていたが、ある時社会問題を学生が英語で話し合うフォーラムに参加した。そこでアンコールワットの修復に携わっている大学教授に出会った。聞くと日本政府としてアンコールワットの修復に力を入れていて、それによりカンボジアの復興を支援しているとのことだった。カンボジアというとポル・ポト政権の虐殺や地雷など負のイメージが強く、距離的にも心理的にも自分とは遠く離れた場所という印象だった。ただ、実際に復興に携わる人に出会い直接話を聞くと、遠かった世界が途端にリアルに感じる不思議な感覚を覚えた。それから4年後、私もその国をようやく訪れることができた。人生の様々な選択は人との出逢いで変わると私は思う。

ニューヨークと言えば摩天楼の夜景は絶対見たいと思っていた。夜景を見るならエンパイアステートビルだ。エンパイアステートビルはドンキーコング、ゴーストバスターズ、巡り会えたら、など数々の映画の舞台にもなっていて、私も映画のシーンを覚えていた。展望台に登るエレベーターホールはビルの絵の壁の前に国旗が飾られて何ともアメリカ的だった。102階の展望台へ出ると目の前にはニューヨークの摩天楼が広がっていた。屋上は12月の夜で風も強く極寒だったが、眼下に広がる眺めは煌びやかで本当に美しかった。100万ドルの夜景という言葉に偽りはなかったと思う。

ミラノと言えばミラノコレクションなどファッションの中心というイメージがある。そのミラノでハイブランドの店が並ぶのが、ドゥオーモ広場北側にあるショッピングアーケード「ガレリア・ヴィットリオ・エマヌエーレ2世」だ。私が訪れたのはまだ20歳のイギリス留学中だったのでハイブランドには縁がなかったが、アーケード自体が名所のようになっているので是非見てみたいと思っていた。行ってみるとアーケードの天井にはフレスコ画が描かれ、床はイタリア王国や都市の紋章などがモザイク画で描かれていた。ここで写真を撮れば自分でもちょっと絵になるかもと思って私も記念写真を撮ったが、今も同じように多くの人が同じ場所で写真を撮っているようだ。若い私はブランド品を買わなくてもその場に行くだけで少しだけファッションの都の雰囲気を感じられた気になれたので、とても安上がりだったなあと思う。ただ、大人になった今行ったとしても、庶民の私では中々あの場所で買い物をする勇気はないなあと感じている。

Back then, just being there was enough to make me feel the atmosphere of a fashion capital, without buying anything at all. Looking back, it was a very budget-friendly way to enjoy Milan. Even today, I suspect I’d still hesitate to shop there, ordinary as I am.
