*街が美しく見える季節
ヴェネツィアは私が最も訪れたいと思っていた街の一つである。幼い時にトムとジェリーのアニメでトムがヴェネツィアのゴンドラでサンタルチアを歌っているのを見て、何故か無性にそこに行きたいと思ったのだ。
それから時は流れ、私は幸運にも二度ヴェネツィアを訪れることが出来た。一度目はイギリス大学学部留学中の冬休み。ウィーンから夜行列車を利用した。時期が少しずれてヴェネツィア・カーニバルは残念ながら見れなかったが、高潮のシーズンでもサンマルコ広場が水没していなかったのはラッキーだった。初めて見る水の都は曇り空だったからか少し薄暗く見えたが、入り組んだ水路や石畳の小路はとても美しかった。
二度目は新婚旅行で妻と訪れた。訪れたのは7月で夏のイタリアはとても日差しが強かった。しかし、冬の薄暗い雰囲気とは全く異なり、リアルト橋などの白い街並みは太陽の光に照らされてより一層美しく見えた。
同じ街を違う季節に訪れたことで、旅をする上で季節はとても大きな要素であると改めて実感をした。
*The Season When the City Looks Beautiful
Venice is one of the cities I've always wanted to visit. When I was a child, I saw Tom singing "Santa Lucia" on a gondola in Venice in a Tom and Jerry cartoon, and for some reason, I had an irresistible urge to go there.
Time passed, and I was fortunate enough to visit Venice twice. The first time was during my winter break while studying at a university in the UK. I took an overnight train from Vienna. Although I couldn't witness the Venice Carnival due to the timing, it was lucky that St. Mark's Square wasn't flooded during the high tide season. The city of canals, with its intricate waterways and cobblestone alleys, looked somewhat dim under the cloudy sky, but it was undeniably beautiful.
The second time was on my honeymoon with my wife in July. Summer in Italy was scorching, in stark contrast to the subdued atmosphere of winter. However, the white architecture, including the Rialto Bridge, looked even more stunning under the sun's rays.
Visiting the same city in different seasons made me realize once again that the season plays a significant role in travel.
