+二十歳の大冒険～多国籍の若者とキャンプツアーで北極圏を目指した話
これまでで一番の旅先は何処かと問われると色々と迷うが、一番の旅は何かという問いならば即答ができる。それは二十歳の時の北欧キャンプツアーだ。イギリス学部への留学中、せっかくなので夏休みをフルに使って旅をしようと考えた。最初は自分で中央ヨーロッパの国々を回ろうかと考えていたが、北欧の魅力を友人から聞かされる内に、時間をかけて北欧を旅することは今でなければ出来ないかもしれないと考え、行先を北欧に変更した。
どうやって行こうか考える中で、旅行代理店であるツアーのパンフレットに出会った。それはいわゆるアドベンチャーツアーという種類のもので、30日かけてバスでヨーロッパの最北端を目指すというものだった。宿泊施設はキャンプサイトでテント泊となっていて料金もかなり安かったので、そのツアーに申し込むことにした。
ルートはロンドンから船でドーバー海峡を渡り、その後バスでフランス、ベルギー、ドイツ、オランダ、デンマークを通って、スウェーデン、ノルウェー、フィンランドの北欧3カ国とバルト三国のエストニアを回るというものだった。ツアーに集まった人数は40人で国籍は日本、イギリス、オーストラリア、ニュージーランド、ドイツ、フランス、韓国、イスラエル、南アフリカ、香港の10カ国の若者が集まった。日本のツアーのように旅程が全て決められている訳ではなく、基本的には移動と宿泊だけ一緒で街に着いたら自由というスタイルだった。街々では城や美術館を巡り、ノルウェーではフィヨルドや氷河を訪れながら、北緯66度33分以北の北極圏を目指した。キャンプサイトでは色々なイベントがあり、武勇伝的に北極圏の湖で泳ぐ催しがあったり、大きな水色のポリバケツのゴミ箱の容器一杯にサングリアを作って大宴会をしたりもした。一台のバスで皆で移動するため、30日という期間だが集まった人達とはとても深く仲良くなることが出来た。それぞれの旅話はまた別途書いていこうと思うが、私にとっては正に二十歳の大冒険という感じで、あの夏のワクワクは今でも忘れない。若い頃の方が感性が豊かなので、諺にもあるように若い時に色々な旅をした方が絶対に良いと思う。
*Twenty-Year-Old Adventure: A Tale of Venturing to the Arctic Circle on a Multinational Camping Tour
When asked about my best travel experience, the answer is immediate if the query revolves around the ultimate journey. It was the Northern European camping tour at the age of twenty. While studying in a British university, I decided to make the most of my summer break with an extensive trip. Initially contemplating a solo tour of Central European countries, my friends' enchanting stories about Scandinavia convinced me that this might be the opportune moment to explore the Nordic wonders. Thus, I switched my destination to the North.
As I pondered over my travel options, I stumbled upon a brochure from a travel agency offering a kind of adventure tour – a 30-day bus journey aiming for the northernmost parts of Europe. The accommodation involved camping at sites with tent lodgings, and the cost was quite affordable, prompting me to sign up for the tour.
The route commenced from London, crossing the English Channel by ferry, then traversing France, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, before exploring Sweden, Norway, Finland, along with the Baltic countries of Estonia, all within 30 days. The tour group consisted of 40 individuals from 10 different countries: Japan, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, South Korea, Israel, South Africa, and Hong Kong. Unlike guided Japanese tours, our itinerary was flexible upon arrival at each destination, granting us freedom to explore the cities independently. We visited castles and museums in various towns, explored fjords and glaciers in Norway, aiming for the Arctic Circle beyond the 66th parallel.
The campgrounds hosted diverse events, including a daredevil swim in a lake within the Arctic Circle and hosting grand feasts with sangria made in a large blue polybucket trash container. Traveling together on a single bus for 30 days forged strong bonds among us. Although I plan to write individual stories of our adventures separately, that summer felt like the epitome of a twenty-year-old's grand adventure, and the excitement from that time remains unforgettable. Considering the richness of sensibility in youth, I firmly believe the adage: it's essential to embark on various journeys during one's younger days.
