*天空の城ラピュタでシータが空から降りてきた場所を訪れた話
私は世代的に宮崎駿のアニメが大好きである。特に風の谷のナウシカや天空の城ラピュタは子供の時に金曜ロードショーで上映していたので、ビデオ録画をして何度も何度も見た記憶がある。
さて、その天空の城ラピュタの舞台はイギリスのウェールズ地方と言われている。ウェールズは歴史的に炭鉱業が盛んな地域であり、昔の炭鉱が今は博物館として保存をされている。私はイギリス大学院留学中にその一つであるカーディフ近郊のビッグピット国立石炭博物館を訪れた。
天空の城ラピュタは炭鉱の街が舞台となっており、物語の冒頭、ヒロインのシータが空から降りてきて主人公のパズーがそれを受け止めるシーンはとても印象的だ。そして、ビッグピットには、 あの巨大な巻き上げ機がモニュメント的に保存されていた。映画の姿そのままで、もしかしたら宮崎駿監督も訪れたかもしれないと妄想し、映画のシーンを思い出しながらワクワクしながら眺めていた。大学院のエクスカーションツアーで訪れたので、他にも炭鉱の見学ツアーなどもあり、ウェールズの歴史や産業の勉強としても興味深かった。少年時代に映画を見ていた時には、まさか舞台となる場所を訪れるとは夢にも思っていなかった。予想を出来ないからこそ、人生は面白いのだ。

I love Studio Ghibli movies, particularly Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and Laputa: Castle in the Sky, which I watched countless times after recording them from Friday Roadshow as a child.
Castle in the Sky is said to be set in Wales, UK, historically known for its coal mining. Old mines are now preserved as museums, like Big Pit National Coal Museum near Cardiff, which I visited during my studies in the UK.
The film features a mining town, and the scene where the heroine, Sheeta, descends from the sky and is caught by the protagonist, Pazu, is striking. At Big Pit, a huge winding machine, much like the one in the movie, is monumentally preserved. I imagined Hayao Miyazaki might have visited too, adding excitement to the experience. The excursion included mine tours, deepening my interest in Welsh history and industry. Visiting a place that inspired a childhood movie was beyond my dreams, proving life's unpredictability makes it fascinating.
