*大麻も売春も合法な街
オランダといえばチューリップや風車。これが私のイメージだった。イギリス学部留学中の夏休み、私は北欧を巡る多国籍なアドベンチャーツアーでオランダのアムステルダムを訪れた。移動中のバスでは街に着く前にニュージーランド人のツアーガイドが簡単な説明をしてくれるのだが、アムステルダムのカフェでは「smokey」と付いているものは大麻が吸えるカフェということなのだそうだ。オランダでは国が管理をした方が安全であるという考え方で大麻も売春も合法らしい。そんなことは日本ではあまり知られていないので、いきなりの実践的な解説でかなりの衝撃を受けた。勿論は私はどちらも体験をしていない。しかし、欧米系のツアーメンバーの中には体験した人もいるようだが、そこは個人の自由で自己責任ということなのだろう。アムステルダムは北のヴェネツィアとも言われ運河の街並みは確かに美しかったが、何となく私には暗い印象の街に感じてしまった。
*A City Where Both Cannabis and Prostitution are Legal
When I thought of the Netherlands, tulips and windmills came to mind. During the summer break of my study abroad in the UK, I visited Amsterdam as part of a multinational adventure tour of Northern Europe. On the bus ride to the city, our New Zealand tour guide explained that cafés with "smokey" in their name are places where you can smoke cannabis. The Dutch believe that government regulation makes it safer, which is why both cannabis and prostitution are legal. This was quite shocking, as such information isn't widely known in Japan. Naturally, I didn't try either. However, some of the Western tour members did, but that's a matter of personal choice and responsibility. Amsterdam, often called the Venice of the North, has beautiful canals, yet the city left me with a somewhat dark impression.
