*グリニッジ天文台で世界を跨いだ話
地球は丸い、そして広い。という訳で国によって時刻というのは異なっている。それぞれのタイムゾーンを決める時に基準とされるのがグリニッジ標準時と言われるものだ。これはイギリスのグリニッジ天文台の場所の時刻で、グリニッジ天文台は経度0度に位置している。日本は東経135度に位置し、グリニッジ標準時とは9時間の差があり、GMT+9:00と表現される。
せっかくイギリスにいるのであれば、その場所を見てみたい、と思い大学学部留学中にグリニッジを訪れた。グリニッジはロンドンの南東部の町で、留学先はイギリス中部だったので、ロンドンに遊びに行く時についでに立ち寄った。グリニッジでは標準子午線を跨いで写真を撮りたいと思っていた。何故なら、東経西経の境目を跨ぐということは世界を跨ぐということ、世界を跨ぐって何かカッコイイと若い私は思ったのだった。もう25年以上前のことなので天文台の詳細は忘れてしまったが、そのことだけは記念の写真と共に今でも覚えている。あれからかなりの年月が経ったが、多くの人が今でも同じように写真を撮っているようなので、時代は変わっても考えることは同じだなあと少し嬉しく思った。

Setting the time for each zone relies on the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), established at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, UK, positioned at longitude 0 degrees. Japan, situated at 135 degrees east longitude, differs by 9 hours from GMT, expressed as GMT+9:00.
During my undergraduate exchange program in the UK, I seized the chance to visit Greenwich. Eager to explore, being in the middle of England for studies, I made a detour while visiting London, as Greenwich, a town southeast of London, piqued my curiosity. I yearned to capture a photo straddling the Prime Meridian; crossing from east to west felt like crossing the world, an audacious notion that intrigued my younger self. Though the observatory's details have faded from memory after more than 25 years, I still recall that moment preserved in a commemorative photo. Despite the passage of time, observing many others still capturing similar photos today brings a sense of continuity, reassuring that despite changing times, some thoughts remain unchanged."
