*一人旅でエジプトに午前2時に着いてヤバいと感じた話
イギリス大学院留学中にエジプト旅行に行った時の話だ。私はギリシャのアテネから空路でカイロに入る計画で、到着時刻が午前2時の予定だった。私はエジプトではアドベンチャーツアーに参加する予定だったので、着いた日の夜中は節約のためにも空港で過ごそうと考えていた。
ところが実際に着いてみると皆タクシーで街に向かうようで、空港には殆ど人がいなくなってしまった。初めての国、しかも初アフリカで不安な中、流石にこれはヤバいと怖くなった。辺りを見回してみると同じように困っている若者が二人だけいた。話してみるとイギリスから旅行に来たそうで、宿も取っていないのでどうしようかと思っているとの事。私と同じ状況だったので朝まで一緒に行動することにして、空港にいても仕方ないので、とりあえず街に飲みに行こうとなった。
タクシードライバーに適当な飲み屋に連れて行ってくれと頼んだら、路地の奥の建物の2階で看板も何も無いところに連れていかれた。少し怖かったが、選択肢もなかったのでそこで飲むことにした。簡素なソファーが何脚かあるだけのところで壁にも虫が這っていたがビールは出てきたので、明け方までそこで飲んで話をしていた。後になって考えてみると、エジプトはイスラム教国でお酒を禁じでいるので街中に堂々と飲み屋はなかったのだとわかった。
明け方になったらピラミッドを見に行こうとなり、タクシーを飛ばしてピラミッドに向かった。自分としてはアドベンチャーツアーでのメインイベントの一つと考えていたが、いきなり初日の朝に目的を達成してしまった。気持ちとしては少し複雑だったが、予定通りに行かないのも旅の醍醐味である。朝食は近くの高級ホテルで食べたので、結局宿に泊まった方が安かったような気もするが、想定外のことが起こるからこそ旅は楽しいのだと思う。
*A Solo Journey to Egypt: A Sketchy Arrival at 2 AM
During my postgraduate studies in the UK, I embarked on a trip to Egypt. My plan was to fly from Athens, Greece, to Cairo, arriving around 2 AM. Intending to save money, I decided to spend the midnight hours at the airport since most fellow travelers seemed to be heading into the city by taxi, leaving the airport nearly deserted.
Upon arrival, anxiety set in as I realized the situation was precarious in an unfamiliar country, especially my first time in Africa. Spotting two similarly stranded young travelers, who happened to be from the UK and also without accommodations, we decided to stick together until morning. Feeling that staying at the airport was futile, we opted to venture into the city for a drink.
When we asked a taxi driver to take us to a suitable place, we ended up in a sketchy second-floor establishment in a dimly lit alley with no signage. Though a bit unnerving, we had no other options. As we sat on simple sofas with insects crawling on the walls, beer arrived, and we spent the early hours chatting. Later, we realized that openly accessible bars were scarce due to Egypt being a predominantly Islamic country with alcohol restrictions.
Come dawn, we decided to head to the pyramids, a major event in my adventure tour itinerary. Achieving a key goal on the first morning left me with mixed emotions, but the unpredictability of travel is what makes it truly enjoyable. Despite the unexpected twists, such as having an expensive breakfast at a nearby luxury hotel, I couldn't help but appreciate the excitement and charm that unexpected events bring to the journey.
