*ナイル川の上で小舟で一泊して見た最高の星空
星降る夜という表現があるが、旅先で正にそのような星空を見たことがあるので、その時のことを書いてみたい。
日本の都会では夜空を見上げても美しい星空を見るのは難しい。私は田舎に住んでいるが、それでも見られる星は限られている。実は私は天文好きで幼い頃の夢は宇宙飛行士か天文学者だった。昔の夢を叶えるべく、最近「星のソムリエ」という資格を取得したのだが、その辺りのことは別ブログに書いているのでそちらをご参照頂きたい。

さて、私は若い時にアドベンチャーツアーでエジプトを旅し、その時にナイル川の上で小舟で一泊することになった。ナイル川クルーズは豪華客船が有名だが、私が乗ったのはファルーカという伝統的な木造の帆掛け舟で、舟に乗って周りの村を訪れながら川の上で一泊する旅程だった。舟にはトイレがないので行きたい時は早めに船頭に伝え、そうすると川岸に寄せてくれるので、あとはその辺で用を足すというスタイル。かなりワイルドだが周りは真っ暗で誰も何も見えないので問題がないということなのだろう。ただ、私はそこまでワイルドになれなかったので朝までトイレは我慢をした。夜は舟の甲板で皆で雑魚寝をしたが、朝方4時頃にふと目が覚めたので蚊帳を出て船のへりに座り、何気なく空を見上げた。すると、空には夜空を埋め尽くす程の数の星が輝いていた。小舟の上で水面にも近く、周りは真っ暗で何も無いので、まるで宇宙の中で浮いているような錯覚を感じた。そして、空で瞬く無数の星々を見つめていると、美しいというよりも空に吸い込まれそうな恐怖を感じてしまった。その後、また一眠りして目が覚めた時、あまりにも現実離れしていたので夢だったのだろうかと感じてしまったが、あれは確かにリアルな出来事だったと思う。体験して初めてわかることもあり、旅はその機会や新たな気づきを与えてくれる。だから、私は旅が好きなのだ。
*The Amazing Starry Night I Witnessed While Spending a Night on the Nile River in a Small Boat
I once experienced a breathtaking starry night while spending a night on a small boat on the Nile River. There's a saying about nights filled with falling stars, and I truly witnessed such a spectacle during my travels.
In Japan's urban areas, it's challenging to behold a beautiful starry sky. Even though I live in the countryside, the stars visible to me are limited. As a lover of astronomy, my childhood dream was to become an astronaut or an astronomer. Recently, in pursuit of that old dream, I acquired a qualification as a "Stargazing Sommelier," but I've detailed that on a separate blog for reference.
During my youthful adventures, I traveled through Egypt on an adventure tour and spent a night aboard a traditional wooden sailboat called a Felucca on the Nile River. While Nile cruises on luxury liners are well-known, my journey involved sailing on this ancient vessel, visiting surrounding villages while spending a night on the river. With no toilet aboard, one had to inform the boatman in advance for a riverside stop, adopting a rather wild approach. Despite everyone sleeping on the boat's deck at night, I couldn't fully embrace the wildness and refrained from using the restroom until morning.
At around 4 am, I woke up and, stepping out of the mosquito net, sat by the boat's edge, casually gazing up at the sky. What met my eyes were countless stars filling the night sky. Being close to the water's surface on the small boat, surrounded by darkness and nothingness, I felt as though I were floating in the middle of the universe. Yet, while mesmerized by the myriad twinkling stars, I felt not just beauty but an overwhelming sense of fear, as if the sky were about to engulf me. Later, upon waking from another short sleep, the experience felt so surreal that I questioned if it was a dream. However, I'm certain it was indeed a real event.
Travel offers opportunities and fresh realizations that one only comprehends through experience. That's why I love traveling.
