オランダ出身の画家としてはゴッホが有名である。ゴッホと言えば「ひまわり」が直ぐに思い浮かぶかもしれないが、当然他にも数々の名画を残している。その一つに「アルルの跳ね橋」という作品がある。これはゴッホがフランスのアルル地方にいる時、故郷のアムステルダムの跳ね橋を偲んで描いた作品だと言われている。そのアムステルダムで唯一現存している木製の跳ね橋がこの「マヘレの跳ね橋」だ。観光名所にもなっており、丁度私が訪れた時、観光船が通り跳ね橋が開いたが、まさに絵画の跳ね橋そのままだった。その姿を見ながら、遠く離れたフランスで故郷を偲んでいたゴッホの姿を想像し、少しセンチメンタルな気持ちになりながら私はシャッターを切った。

When it comes to Dutch painters, Vincent van Gogh is perhaps the most famous. While his "Sunflowers" may come to mind first, he left behind many other masterpieces. One of them is The Langlois Bridge at Arles, said to be inspired by his memories of the drawbridges in his hometown of Amsterdam while he was staying in Arles, France. Today, the only remaining wooden drawbridge of that kind in Amsterdam is the Magere Brug, or "Skinny Bridge." It's now a well-known tourist attraction.
When I visited, a sightseeing boat passed through and the bridge opened—just like the one in van Gogh’s painting. As I watched it rise, I imagined van Gogh, far from home, painting with nostalgia in his heart. That image moved me, and I quietly pressed the shutter of my camera. In that moment, I felt that imagination is what truly enriches our travels.
