*タイのチェンマイで1泊50円の宿に泊まった話
大学時代のイギリスへの交換留学中はヨーロッパを回っていたので、今度はアジアに行こう！と思い卒業旅行では台湾とタイへ旅をした。タイではバンコクだけでは勿体無いので北部のチェンマイとリゾート地のプーケットも訪れた。チェンマイへはバンコクから夜行列車を利用した。チェンマイでの目的は少数民族の村とエレファントライドだった。当時はSNSなどないので、地球の歩き方をバイブルにして、日本人に人気のゲストハウスのツアーを使用することにした。日本人向けだったが現地経営のツアーのため価格は破格の安さだった。ツアーでは少数民族の村で藁葺屋根の小屋に一泊し、筏での川下りやエレファントライドを楽しんだ。少数民族の観光はビジネス化されていて、子供達が民家で民芸品などを販売していた。彼らにとって生活が豊かにはなっているのだろうが、観光ビジネスの在り方を思うと少し複雑な気持ちになった。象は背中に乗ってジャングルを散策するというもので、日本では絶対に出来ない経験だった。実際に触ってみるとゴワゴワ、プヨプヨした感じで今でもその感触は覚えている。
さて、一泊二日のツアーを終了してゲストハウスに戻ってくると、なんと部屋が無いと言われてしまった。一泊50円の小部屋ならあるということだったので、ツアーで一緒だった日本人の同年代の若者と共に、ひとつのベッドを分け合った。その頃は沢木耕太郎の深夜特急に影響を受けていたので、流石アジアだなあと衝撃を受けながら夜を過ごしたが、今となっては良い武勇伝になったと前向きに捉えている。
*Staying in a 50 Yen Hostel in Chiang Mai, Thailand
During my exchange study in the UK, I traveled around Europe, so I thought, why not go to Asia next? For my graduation trip, I traveled to Taiwan and Thailand. In Thailand, I didn't want to just visit Bangkok, so I also went to Chiang Mai in the north and the resort area of Phuket. I used an overnight train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. My goal in Chiang Mai was to visit a village of a minority tribe and ride an elephant. Since there was no social media back then, I relied on guidebooks and chose a tour popular among Japanese at a locally-run guesthouse for its incredibly low price. The tour included an overnight stay in a thatched-roof hut in a minority tribe village, rafting down the river, and enjoying an elephant ride. The tourism involving the minority tribes was quite commercialized, with children selling handicrafts in their homes. While it must have improved their lives, I had mixed feelings about the way tourism was managed. Riding an elephant through the jungle was an experience I could never have in Japan. Feeling their rough yet soft skin, I still remember the sensation.
After finishing the two-day tour and returning to the guesthouse, I was told there were no rooms available. They said they had a small room for 50 Yen a night, so I shared a bed with a Japanese person of the same age who was on the tour with me. At that time, I was influenced by Kōtarō Sawaki's Shinya Tokkyū (Midnight Express), so I spent the night in amazement, thinking, "This is truly Asia!" Looking back, I now consider it a good adventure.
