台湾に行く前は日本と良く似た国という印象が強かったので、勝手に日本と同じような気候だろうと思い込んでいた。私は大学の卒業旅行で3月に訪れたが、到着した瞬間になんて暖かい国だろうと感じた。そう、台湾は南国なのだ。平均気温も1月のいちばん寒い時でも最低気温が15℃くらいなので、日本よりも断然に暖かい。地図で見てみるとイメージしやすいが、北にある台北でも沖縄の石垣島と同じ緯度にあり、高雄は更に南にある。行ってみると高雄はヤシの木が生い茂り、南国リゾートという感じだった。
私は台湾人とは色々と縁があり、イギリス大学院への留学時代にも台湾人の友人がいた。イギリスは当然雪が降るので、冬になり雪が降った時は大はしゃぎで、初めて雪を見た！と言って外に出て嬉しそうに写真を撮っていた。
日本にいると四季があることが当たり前に感じてしまうが、そうでは無い国も多い。地球は丸くて大きいのだということを改めて感じた出来事だった。

Before visiting Taiwan, I had the impression that it was quite similar to Japan, so I assumed the climate would be similar too. I went there in March for my graduation trip, and the moment I arrived, I was struck by how warm it was. Yes—Taiwan is a subtropical country. Even in January, the coldest month, the average low is around 15°C, making it much warmer than Japan. Looking at a map helps put this in perspective—Taipei, in the north, is at the same latitude as Ishigaki Island in Okinawa, and Kaohsiung, in the south, is even further south. In fact, Kaohsiung felt like a tropical resort with its palm trees.
I've had several Taiwanese friends, including one I met while studying in the UK. When it snowed in winter there, she got so excited — she ran outside saying it was her first time seeing snow and happily took photos.
Living in Japan, we take four seasons for granted, but this reminded me how vast and varied the world really is.
