台中では友人の家に泊めてもらった。お祖父さんがいて挨拶をしたら、日本語で返事が返ってきてとても驚いたが、日本の統治下の時代に日本語教育を受けたからと知り、申し訳ないような何とも複雑な気持ちを感じた。ただ、街中の本屋に行ってもかなり広さのスペースに日本の関係の書籍が置いてあり、当時は宮崎駿のもののけ姫がヒットしていた時だったが日本のビデオも日本より早く販売されていた。友人は「過去の歴史は色々あるが私も台湾の人の多くも日本が好きだ。日本文化も好きだし優れた技術を学びたい。だから、私は日本に留学をしたんだ。」と話してくれた。過去の植民地支配の歴史があっても親日でいてくれる台湾という国を、実際に訪れて自分の目で見て人々と直に触れ合うことで、私はさらに好きになった。台湾への卒業旅行は、学校の歴史の本だけではわからないリアルを実感できたとても学びの多い旅だった。

I visited Taiwan for my graduation trip from university. A Taiwanese friend, who had studied with me for four years as an international student, kindly drove and guided me throughout my stay. Yet, I also noticed how many Japanese books and videos were sold in local bookstores—at the time, Princess Mononoke was especially popular. My friend told me, “Despite our history, many Taiwanese people, including myself, like Japan. We admire its culture and technology—that’s why I chose to study in Japan.” This trip gave me a powerful, firsthand insight beyond what history textbooks could offer.
