これまでで一番の旅先は何処かと問われると色々と迷うが、一番の旅は何かという問いならば即答ができる。それは二十歳の時の北欧キャンプツアーだ。イギリス学部への留学中、せっかくなので夏休みをフルに使って旅をしようと考えた。最初は自分で中央ヨーロッパの国々を回ろうかと考えていたが、北欧の魅力を友人から聞かされる内に、時間をかけて北欧を旅することは今でなければ出来ないかもしれないと考え、行先を北欧に変更した。
どうやって行こうか考える中で、旅行代理店であるツアーのパンフレットに出会った。それはいわゆるアドベンチャーツアーという種類のもので、30日かけてバスでヨーロッパの最北端を目指すというものだった。宿泊施設はキャンプサイトでテント泊となっていて料金もかなり安かったので、そのツアーに申し込むことにした。
ルートはロンドンから船でドーバー海峡を渡り、その後バスでフランス、ベルギー、ドイツ、オランダ、デンマークを通って、スウェーデン、ノルウェー、フィンランドの北欧3カ国とバルト三国のエストニアを回るというものだった。ツアーに集まった人数は40人で国籍は日本、イギリス、オーストラリア、ニュージーランド、ドイツ、フランス、韓国、イスラエル、南アフリカ、香港の10カ国の若者が集まった。日本のツアーのように旅程が全て決められている訳ではなく、基本的には移動と宿泊だけ一緒で街に着いたら自由というスタイルだった。街々では城や美術館を巡り、ノルウェーではフィヨルドや氷河を訪れながら、北緯66度33分以北の北極圏を目指した。キャンプサイトでは色々なイベントがあり、武勇伝的に北極圏の湖で泳ぐ催しがあったり、大きな水色のポリバケツのゴミ箱の容器一杯にサングリアを作って大宴会をしたりもした。一台のバスで皆で移動するため、30日という期間だが集まった人達とはとても深く仲良くなることが出来た。それぞれの旅話はまた別途書いていこうと思うが、私にとっては正に二十歳の大冒険という感じで、あの夏のワクワクは今でも忘れない。若い頃の方が感性が豊かなので、諺にもあるように若い時に色々な旅をした方が絶対に良いと思う。

When asked about my best travel experience, the answer is immediate if the query revolves around the ultimate journey. It was the Northern European camping tour at the age of twenty. While studying in a British university, I decided to make the most of my summer break with an extensive trip. Initially contemplating a solo tour of Central European countries, my friends' enchanting stories about Scandinavia convinced me that this might be the opportune moment to explore the Nordic wonders. Thus, I switched my destination to the North.
As I pondered over my travel options, I stumbled upon a brochure from a travel agency offering a kind of adventure tour – a 30-day bus journey aiming for the northernmost parts of Europe. The accommodation involved camping at sites with tent lodgings, and the cost was quite affordable, prompting me to sign up for the tour.
The route commenced from London, crossing the English Channel by ferry, then traversing France, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, before exploring Sweden, Norway, Finland, along with the Baltic countries of Estonia, all within 30 days. The tour group consisted of 40 individuals from 10 different countries: Japan, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, South Korea, Israel, South Africa, and Hong Kong. Unlike guided Japanese tours, our itinerary was flexible upon arrival at each destination, granting us freedom to explore the cities independently. We visited castles and museums in various towns, explored fjords and glaciers in Norway, aiming for the Arctic Circle beyond the 66th parallel.
The campgrounds hosted diverse events, including a daredevil swim in a lake within the Arctic Circle and hosting grand feasts with sangria made in a large blue polybucket trash container. Traveling together on a single bus for 30 days forged strong bonds among us. Although I plan to write individual stories of our adventures separately, that summer felt like the epitome of a twenty-year-old's grand adventure, and the excitement from that time remains unforgettable. Considering the richness of sensibility in youth, I firmly believe the adage: it's essential to embark on various journeys during one's younger days.

地球は丸い、そして広い。という訳で国によって時刻というのは異なっている。それぞれのタイムゾーンを決める時に基準とされるのがグリニッジ標準時と言われるものだ。これはイギリスのグリニッジ天文台の場所の時刻で、グリニッジ天文台は経度0度に位置している。日本は東経135度に位置し、グリニッジ標準時とは9時間の差があり、GMT+9:00と表現される。
せっかくイギリスにいるのであれば、その場所を見てみたい、と思い大学学部留学中にグリニッジを訪れた。グリニッジはロンドンの南東部の町で、留学先はイギリス中部だったので、ロンドンに遊びに行く時についでに立ち寄った。グリニッジでは標準子午線を跨いで写真を撮りたいと思っていた。何故なら、東経西経の境目を跨ぐということは世界を跨ぐということ、世界を跨ぐって何かカッコイイと若い私は思ったのだった。もう25年以上前のことなので天文台の詳細は忘れてしまったが、そのことだけは記念の写真と共に今でも覚えている。あれからかなりの年月が経ったが、多くの人が今でも同じように写真を撮っているようなので、時代は変わっても考えることは同じだなあと少し嬉しく思った。

Eager to explore, being in the middle of England for studies, I made a detour while visiting London, as Greenwich, a town southeast of London, piqued my curiosity. I yearned to capture a photo straddling the Prime Meridian; crossing from east to west felt like crossing the world, an audacious notion that intrigued my younger self. Though the observatory's details have faded from memory after more than 25 years, I still recall that moment preserved in a commemorative photo. Despite the passage of time, observing many others still capturing similar photos today brings a sense of continuity, reassuring that despite changing times, some thoughts remain unchanged."

星降る夜という表現があるが、旅先で正にそのような星空を見たことがあるので、その時のことを書いてみたい。
日本の都会では夜空を見上げても美しい星空を見るのは難しい。私は田舎に住んでいるが、それでも見られる星は限られている。実は私は天文好きで幼い頃の夢は宇宙飛行士か天文学者だった。昔の夢を叶えるべく、最近「星のソムリエ」という資格を取得したのだが、その辺りのことは別ブログに書いているのでそちらをご参照頂きたい。

さて、私は若い時にアドベンチャーツアーでエジプトを旅し、その時にナイル川の上で小舟で一泊することになった。ナイル川クルーズは豪華客船が有名だが、私が乗ったのはファルーカという伝統的な木造の帆掛け舟で、舟に乗って周りの村を訪れながら川の上で一泊する旅程だった。舟にはトイレがないので行きたい時は早めに船頭に伝え、そうすると川岸に寄せてくれるので、あとはその辺で用を足すというスタイル。かなりワイルドだが周りは真っ暗で誰も何も見えないので問題がないということなのだろう。ただ、私はそこまでワイルドになれなかったので朝までトイレは我慢をした。夜は舟の甲板で皆で雑魚寝をしたが、朝方4時頃にふと目が覚めたので蚊帳を出て船のへりに座り、何気なく空を見上げた。すると、空には夜空を埋め尽くす程の数の星が輝いていた。小舟の上で水面にも近く、周りは真っ暗で何も無いので、まるで宇宙の中で浮いているような錯覚を感じた。そして、空で瞬く無数の星々を見つめていると、美しいというよりも空に吸い込まれそうな恐怖を感じてしまった。その後、また一眠りして目が覚めた時、あまりにも現実離れしていたので夢だったのだろうかと感じてしまったが、あれは確かにリアルな出来事だったと思う。体験して初めてわかることもあり、旅はその機会や新たな気づきを与えてくれる。だから、私は旅が好きなのだ。

I once experienced a breathtaking starry night while spending a night on a small boat on the Nile River. There's a saying about nights filled with falling stars, and I truly witnessed such a spectacle during my travels.
In Japan's urban areas, it's challenging to behold a beautiful starry sky. Even though I live in the countryside, the stars visible to me are limited. As a lover of astronomy, my childhood dream was to become an astronaut or an astronomer. Recently, in pursuit of that old dream, I acquired a qualification as a "Stargazing Sommelier," but I've detailed that on a separate blog for reference.
During my youthful adventures, I traveled through Egypt on an adventure tour and spent a night aboard a traditional wooden sailboat called a Felucca on the Nile River. While Nile cruises on luxury liners are well-known, my journey involved sailing on this ancient vessel, visiting surrounding villages while spending a night on the river. With no toilet aboard, one had to inform the boatman in advance for a riverside stop, adopting a rather wild approach. Despite everyone sleeping on the boat's deck at night, I couldn't fully embrace the wildness and refrained from using the restroom until morning.
At around 4 am, I woke up and, stepping out of the mosquito net, sat by the boat's edge, casually gazing up at the sky. What met my eyes were countless stars filling the night sky. Being close to the water's surface on the small boat, surrounded by darkness and nothingness, I felt as though I were floating in the middle of the universe. Yet, while mesmerized by the myriad twinkling stars, I felt not just beauty but an overwhelming sense of fear, as if the sky were about to engulf me. Later, upon waking from another short sleep, the experience felt so surreal that I questioned if it was a dream. However, I'm certain it was indeed a real event.
Travel offers opportunities and fresh realizations that one only comprehends through experience. That's why I love traveling.

先日、有休を使って妻と名古屋の御園座に観劇に行った。普段は子供の学校行事や部活が忙しくて二人だけで何処かに行くことは少ないので、久々にゆったりとした時間を過ごすことが出来た。演劇を見てブラブラと街を歩くだけで特別なことは何も無かったがとても楽しい一日だった。付き合ってからちょうど20年が経つが、私達の初めてのデートはパリのオペラ座だった。（そのことについての記事はこちら）20年後のデートは御園座ということでキラキラ感はかなり格落ちの感じもするが、幸せ感は重ねた年月の分だけ増していると思う。
さて、旅は何処に行くかも大事だが誰と行くかが重要だと言われる。ただ、行く場所や共に行く人を選びたいと思っても、いつも理想の旅ができる訳ではない。仕事の出張だと場所も人も選べないし、妻や家族と行く旅先もごく普通のありふれた場所が多い。しかし、それでも旅に行くと新たな発見や色々と楽しいことはある。私の好きな沢木耕太郎も「用意された旅、オリジナルな旅。どちらも上下はなくいずれも楽しい。どんな形であれ旅に出た方が良い。とにかく旅に出ましょう。」と講演で言っていた。問題提起をしておいて無責任かもしれないが、何処に行っても、誰と行っても、何か得るものがあるのではないかと思う。だから、どちらが重要かを悩むのではなく、どんな形の旅でも楽しんだ者勝ちなので、機会を逃さずに旅に出てそれぞれの旅を楽しんだ方が良いと私は思う。

*Travel "Commonplaces": Which is more important, where to go or who to go with?
The other day, I took a day off and went to see a play at Nagoya's Misonoza with my wife. Usually busy with our kids' school events and activities, it's rare for just the two of us to go somewhere together. It was a leisurely day where we could enjoy each other's company. Watching the play and strolling through the city wasn't particularly extraordinary, yet it was a delightful day. It's been exactly 20 years since we started dating, and our first date was at the Paris Opera House (you can read about it here). Comparing it to Misonoza, it might lack the glamour, but the happiness seems to have grown over these years.

While the destination holds importance in travel, they say who you travel with matters more. However, one can't always choose the place or accompany the desired person. Business trips limit both options, and family trips often lead to commonplace destinations. Still, traveling brings discoveries and enjoyable moments. As one of my favorites, Koutarou Sawaki, said in a lecture: "Prepared trips or original ones, both are enjoyable without hierarchy. Regardless of the form, it's good to embark on a journey. Just go." It might seem irresponsible after raising the issue, but I believe that regardless of where or with whom, there's always something to gain. So, instead of pondering what's more important, I think it's better to embrace every form of travel. Seize the opportunities and enjoy each journey for what it is.

イタリア旅行記 : 花の都の名もない絵描き

イギリスへ学部留学をした時の春休み、二週間ほどかけてオーストリアとイタリアを回る旅をした。イタリアへはウィーンから夜行列車でヴェネチアに入り、その後列車でミラノ、ピサ、フィレンツェ、ローマを訪れた。イタリアは本当に見所が多く、其々の街に世界史や美術の時間に勉強をした遺跡や建物、芸術作品が数多くあった。どの街も素晴らしかったが、その中で私が一番美しいと感じたのはフィレンツェだ。
フィレンツェはイタリア中部に位置し、花の都とも呼ばれる美しい街だ。ローマと比べると規模は小さいが、石畳の小路やルネサンスの雰囲気を残す街並みはどこを切り取っても美しかった。また、芸術面でもウッフイ美術館にはボッティチェッリのヴィーナスの誕生など、美術の教科書で見た絵画が数多く展示されていた。そして、街の中心にはドゥオモと呼ばれるサンタ・マリア・デル・フィオーレ大聖堂がある。ドゥオモはオレンジ色の大きなドームと赤、白、緑の大理石で彩られた外観がとても印象深かった。
さて、ヨーロッパの観光地には大体画家がいるが、ドゥオモにも多くの似顔絵描きがいた。普段は通りすぎていたが、この時は美術館のような美しい街並みを歩いていたこもともあり、記念に一枚描いてもらうことにした。画風は画家によって異なり、リアルな絵から漫画のような絵まで色々な人がいたが、私はその中からフィーリングが合う画家を選び似顔絵をお願いした。その時に描いてもらったのが、今ブログのプロフィールに設定している絵である。似顔絵を描いてもらったのは後にも先にもこの時だけで、この絵を見ているとその時のことを思い出す。その後、その画家が有名になったかどうかは知らないが、私にとっては大切な一枚である。

*An Anonymous Artist in the City of Florence
During my spring break while studying abroad in the UK, I embarked on a two-week journey through Austria and Italy. I arrived in Italy by night train from Vienna, visiting Venice and then traveling by train to Milan, Pisa, Florence, and Rome. Italy is brimming with historical sites, buildings studied in world history and art classes, and numerous artistic masterpieces in each city. While all these cities were magnificent, the one that I found the most beautiful was Florence.
Florence, often referred to as the "City of Flowers," is located in central Italy. It may be smaller in scale compared to Rome, but its charming cobblestone streets and the ambiance of the Renaissance era make it stunning from every angle. Moreover, the Uffizi Gallery houses numerous famous artworks, including Botticelli's "The Birth of Venus," which I had seen in art textbooks.In the heart of the city stands the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, commonly known as the Duomo, with its iconic large orange dome and an exterior adorned with red, white, and green marbles.
While most European tourist destinations have street artists, there were many portrait artists near the Duomo. Normally, I would walk past them, but on this occasion, captivated by the artistry of the city, I decided to have a portrait made as a souvenir. Each artist had their unique style, ranging from realistic portraits to more cartoon-like interpretations. I carefully selected an artist whose style resonated with me, and they created the portrait that now serves as my blog's profile picture. This remains the only time I've ever had a portrait done. Looking at it, I'm reminded of that special moment. I don't know if that artist ever became famous, but to me, the portrait is a cherished memory.

カンボジア旅行記 : 未来への希望

*未来への希望
カンボジアという国でイメージするもの。地雷、内戦、治安が悪い・・・等。正直あまり良いイメージは浮かんでこない。しかし、実際に訪れて自分の眼で見ると様々な面が見えてくる。私がカンボジアを訪れたのは2001年。その時のカンボジアはまさに変わりつつある国だった。カンボジアにはアンコールワットという有名な世界遺産がある。当時は年間50万人がアンコールワットを訪れていたが、今では年間700万人が訪れているようだ。当時は観光客の増加に伴い外国資本も進出してきており、ホテル、レストラン、道路などすごいスピードで建設され、街のいたるところが工事中だった。
治安に不安があったこともあり、この時私はガイドと車を個人でチャーターし、アコールワット遺跡群を巡っていた。観光開発は当然良い面、悪い面、どちらも存在する。住民の生活の変化、貧富の差の拡大、環境破壊。しかし、舗装された道路を車で走りながら、ガイドが一言。「この道いい道だろう？そのうちここがハイウェイになるんだ。」（シェムリアップでは舗装されている道はまだ少なかった）そう言って笑っている彼の笑顔は希望に満ちていて、何かとてもポジティブなパワーを感じた。変わっていく街にある今も昔も変わらないもの。時の流れの雄大さを感じられる場所。アンコールワット。遺跡好きな私にとって死ぬまでに絶対訪れたい場所だった。「実際に自分の眼で見てその場に流れる空気を感じたい」そんな気持ちが旅の原点だ。あれから20年以上経ち、シェムリアップの街は大きく変わっていることだろう。彼は今でも笑顔でガイドをしているのだろうか。いつかまた訪れて、あの時想像した未来がどうなったかを見てみたい。

*Hope for the Future
When you think of Cambodia, what comes to mind? Landmines, civil war, poor security... not exactly the best image. However, when you actually visit and see it with your own eyes, you discover various facets. I visited Cambodia in 2001, a time when the country was undergoing significant changes. Cambodia boasts the famous world heritage site, Angkor Wat. At the time, around 500,000 people visited Angkor Wat annually, but now that number has soared to 7 million per year. With the influx of tourists, foreign investments were pouring in, resulting in the rapid construction of hotels, restaurants, and roads. Everywhere you looked, there were construction sites.
Due to security concerns, I chartered a guide and a car to explore the Angkor Wat complex independently. Tourism development has both positive and negative aspects, including changes in people's lives, wealth disparities, and environmental degradation. However, as we drove on newly paved roads, the guide said, "Isn't this road nice? This will become a highway soon." His smile was filled with hope, and it radiated a tremendous positive energy. Even amidst the changing city, some things remain the same. A place where you can feel the grandeur of the passage of time, Angkor Wat. As a lover of historical sites, it was a place I had to visit in my lifetime. The desire to "see it with my own eyes and feel the air in that place" is the essence of travel. It has been over 20 years since then, and the city of Siem Reap has likely changed significantly. I wonder if he still guides with that same smile. Someday, I hope to return and see what the future I imagined back then has become.

若い時にベトナムを一人旅した時、メコン河デルタクルーズに参加をした。ベトナムではCafeという所が旅行会社のようなことをしている。到着直後で色々不安だったので、メジャーなSinh Cafeという所でツアーの手配をすることにした。
メコンデルタへの一日ツアーは昼食付きで$7と非常に安かった。しかし、現地で申し込めばこれが標準なので、日本の旅行社の手数料というものの高さを改めて感じた。ツアーの内容は、マングローブの林の広がるジャングルの中を小舟でクルーズしながら、途中でヤシの実のクラフトを作っている所や養蜂農家に寄って一日を過ごすというもの。夏休み真っ最中ということで、ホーチミンは日本人観光客が非常に多かったらしく、バス一台を日本人が貸し切りガイドも日本人という形で、現地発着のツアーとしては非常に不思議な状況だった。
ホーチミンからバスで2時間でメコン河に着いた。川の色は見事なカフェオレ色。ガイドによると川の色は赤土のせいらしかった。そして、川幅は非常に広い。正直、見た瞬間、かなり圧倒された。ボートに乗り中洲に上陸をして、ヤシの実クラフトや養蜂農家に立ち寄る。そして、小舟に乗り換え、ジャングルの中を更にクルーズを続ける。写真を見ると深いジャングルの中、本格的な探検をしているように見えるかもしれない。しかし、実際はボートに乗って少し歩くだけ。とてもお手軽に「探検」気分が味わえたツアーだった。

*The Cafe au Lait-Colored Mighty River
During my solo trip to Vietnam in my youth, I decided to join a cruise in the Mekong Delta. In Vietnam, there are places called "Cafe" that act like travel agencies. Feeling a bit uncertain upon arrival, I opted to arrange my tour through a well-known place called Sinh Cafe.
The one-day tour to the Mekong Delta, which included lunch, cost only $7 and was incredibly affordable. However, upon realizing that this was the standard rate when booked locally, I couldn't help but be reminded of the high fees charged by Japanese travel agencies. The tour involved cruising in small boats through the mangrove forests, stopping at places where they made crafts from coconuts and visiting a beekeeping farm. It was a day well spent. Since it was the peak of summer vacation, there were many Japanese tourists in Ho Chi Minh City. Our group had rented an entire bus, and our guide was Japanese, making it quite a unique experience for a locally operated tour.
After a 2-hour bus ride from Ho Chi Minh City, we arrived at the Mekong River. The river's color was a stunning shade of cafe au lait. According to our guide, the color was due to the red soil in the area. The river was impressively wide, and I was truly overwhelmed the moment I saw it. We boarded a boat, landed on an island, made crafts from coconuts, visited a beekeeping farm, and then transferred to smaller boats for further cruising through the jungle. Looking at the photos, it might seem like we were embarking on a serious exploration deep in the jungle, but in reality, we only took short walks after getting off the boat. It was a very accessible tour that allowed us to experience the feeling of "exploration" with ease.
