ロンドンと言えば大英博物館は外せない観光スポットだ。大英帝国の遺産を集めたミュージアムで世界中から観光客が集まってくる。色々な国から略奪してきたものを展示しているからかどうかはわからないが、入場料も無料だ。私も留学中、ロンドンに行った際は何度も訪れた。所属点数も800万点と非常に多く、一日では全く回りきれないが、私は遺跡や歴史が好きなので夢のような場所である。大英博物館を訪れるのであれば、是非オススメしたい本がある。それは池澤夏樹の「パレオマニア」という本だ。これは著者が大英博物館で気に入った所蔵品を選び、それが発掘された場所を訪れるというとても贅沢な旅行記だ。私がこの本を読んだのは留学の後だったので訪問する前に読むことは出来なかったが、ギリシャやエジプトなど展示物と実際の土地との繋がりも感じられてとても面白かった。旅は旅行をしている間だけではなく、行くまでの前に色々と想像を巡らせている時間も楽しみの一つだ。旅行先が決まったら、その場所を舞台にした旅行記や小説をネットで探してみては如何だろうか。
