*ロゼッタストーンという世界中から人を引き寄せる展示物
世界史専攻の人であれば、受験の時に「ロゼッタストーン」という言葉を覚えた記憶があるのではないだろうか。フランスの考古学者シャンポリオンがエジプトのロゼッタという場所で発掘し、エジプトの神聖文字(ヒエログリフ)と民衆文字、ギリシア文字の3種類の文字が刻まれていたためにヒエログリフを解読するきっかけとなった石だ。高校時代、友人とテスト勉強で問題を出し合いながら暗記をしていたのを思い出す。
ロゼッタストーンはロンドンの大英博物館に展示してあり、それを目当てに多くの観光客が訪れるメインの展示物の一つだ。実はこの石は結構大きい。世界史の勉強では大きさなど考えたこともなかったか、実際には大きさは114cm、760kgもある。当時はSNSもなく今のように旅行の写真を目にすることも少なかったので、予備知識無しで初めて見た時はかなり驚いた。世界的な博物館や美術館には、学生時代に名前を聞いたような展示物が必ずあるが、メインの展示物が来日することはほぼ無い。だから、私は旅先では美術館や博物館は積極的に訪れることにしている。ちなみに大英博物館ではロゼッタストーンのマウスパッドを販売していたので、思わず購入してしまい、留学中や帰国してからも暫くの間は使っていた。私にとってはそれくらい印象に残った展示物だった。
*The Rosetta Stone: an Exhibit That Draws People from Around the World
If you majored in world history, you might remember the word "Rosetta Stone" from your exams. It's a stone discovered by the French archaeologist Champollion at a place called Rosetta in Egypt. It became the key to deciphering hieroglyphs because it was inscribed with three scripts: Egyptian hieroglyphs, demotic script, and Greek script. I remember memorizing it while studying for tests with friends in high school.
The Rosetta Stone is displayed at the British Museum in London, and it's one of the main attractions that draw many tourists. Surprisingly, the stone is quite large. I never thought about its size when studying world history, but it's actually 114 cm tall and weighs 760 kg. Back then, there wasn't much exposure to travel photos on social media as there is today, so I was quite surprised when I saw it for the first time without any prior knowledge. Globally renowned museums always have exhibits you've heard about in school, but it's rare for the main exhibits to travel to other countries. That's why I make it a point to visit museums and art galleries when I travel. By the way, the British Museum was selling Rosetta Stone mouse pads, and I couldn't resist buying one. I used it during my study abroad and even after returning home for a while. That's how much of an impression it left on me.
