*1ドルの笑顔
カンボジアにはアンコールワットという有名な世界遺産がある。今では観光地としてかなり発展したようだが、私はまだその発展途上にあった2001年にアンコールワットのあるシェムリアップの街を訪れた。当時はまだまだ舗装されていない道が大部分で、道端や観光名所の入口で土産を売る子供達が観光客を見つけるとすぐに集まってきた。日本であれば普通に小学校に通う年代の子供達であり、本来は働くよりも学校に通って教育を受けるべき年代である。子供の方が観光客が買いやすいということで貴重な働き手になってしまっていることを考えると、その子達から物を買うことが良いかどうかは色々と思うところがある。ただ、1ドル、1ドルと言いながら笑顔で近づいてくるとどうしても情が湧いてしまうのも事実だ。
私もカンボジアの土産を何か買おうと思っていたので、寺院の出口にいたその子達の品物を見てみることにした。その中に美しい手織布があったので値段を聞いてみると笑顔で1ドルと答えてくれた。私達には1ドルはお値打ちに聞こえるが、現地ではとても良い収入だろう。私は気に入った柄のものを買うことにした。あれから20年以上経ったが、その時の布は今でも私の部屋の片隅で天体望遠鏡の埃避けのカバーとしてひっそりと活躍している。
*The One-Dollar Smile
Cambodia is home to the famous UNESCO World Heritage site, Angkor Wat. Although it has now become a well-developed tourist destination, I visited the town of Siem Reap, where Angkor Wat is located, in 2002 when it was still developing. At that time, most of the roads were unpaved, and many children sold souvenirs by the roadside and at the entrances of tourist spots. These children were of an age when they should have been attending school, receiving an education rather than working. Seeing them as valuable workers because tourists were more likely to buy from children made me question the ethics of purchasing from them. However, when they approached with smiles, repeatedly saying "one dollar, one dollar," it was hard not to feel sympathy.
As I was planning to buy some Cambodian souvenirs, I decided to look at what these children were selling at the temple exit. I found a beautiful handwoven cloth and asked its price. The child, smiling, said it was one dollar. While one dollar may seem inexpensive to us, it was likely a significant income for them. I decided to buy the cloth with a pattern I liked. Over twenty years later, that cloth still quietly serves as a dust cover for my telescope in the corner of my room.
