*ローマの休日を辿るベタな旅
ローマは古代ローマからの2000年の歴史を持ち、数多くの歴史的、芸術的な観光名所がある。昔の映画だがオードリヘップバーンの「ローマの休日」を思い浮かべる人も多いのではないだろうか。私はイギリス学部留学時代にオーストリア、イタリアを巡る旅の中で、ヴェネツィア、ミラノ、ピザ、フィレンツェを回った後、最後にローマに辿り着いた。
まず最初に感じたのはローマは広いと言うこと。それまでの街と比べると首都で歴史ある街なので当然だが、エリアも広くて見所も点在している。街中を歩くだけでも1000年級の歴史を持つ建造物がゴロゴロあった。せめて有名どころは回りたいという時に役に立ったのがローマの休日だ。フォロ・ロマーノ、トレビの泉、コロッセオ、真実の口、スペイン階段、サンタンジェロ城等々、超有名どころを網羅している。私も真実の口では手を入れて記念写真も撮ってしまった。スペイン階段でアイスクリームは食べなかったが、トレビの泉では皆がやっていたようにコインを投げ入れたりもした。ベタではあるが、それはそれでとても楽しかった記憶がある。
今の時代でも推し活でのロケ地の聖地巡礼などが流行っているのを考えると、ベタだとは思うが有名な映画のロケ地を回りたい、映画と同じことをしたいと思ってしまうのは人間の性ではないだろうか。
*A Cliché Journey Following in the Footsteps of Roman Holiday
Rome, with its 2000-year history dating back to ancient Rome, boasts numerous historical and artistic landmarks. Many might recall the old movie, "Roman Holiday," starring Audrey Hepburn, when thinking of this city. During my undergraduate study in the UK, I embarked on a trip to Austria and Italy, visiting Venice, Milan, Pisa, and Florence before finally reaching Rome.
The first thing I noticed about Rome was its vastness. As the capital and a city with a rich history, it naturally sprawls with scattered attractions. Just walking around the city, I encountered numerous buildings dating back a thousand years. When I wanted to see at least the famous spots, "Roman Holiday" came in handy. It covers all the super famous landmarks like the Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain, Colosseum, Mouth of Truth, Spanish Steps, Castel Sant'Angelo, and more. I even touched the Mouth of Truth and took a commemorative photo. Although I didn't eat ice cream on the Spanish Steps, I did toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain like everyone else was doing. It might be cliché, but I have very fond memories of it.
Even in today's era, with the popularity of pilgrimage visits to filming locations for fan activities, it's human nature to want to visit famous movie locations and do the same things as in the movies, even if it's cliché.
