*ミュンヘンのビアホールのジョッキの大きさに驚いた話
ミュンヘンと言えばビールが有名で、世界最大のビール祭りオクトーバーフェストが開催される町だ。私が訪れたのは、イギリス大学院留学中のイースター休暇だったので祭りの時期ではなかったが、本場のドイツビールは旅の楽しみの一つだった。ミュンヘンでは多数のビアホールがあるが、その中でも16世紀創業のホフブロイハウスが有名なので私もその店を訪れた。そこでビールを頼んで驚いたのはジョッキの大きさである。基本が1Lなのだ。そして周りを見ると皆それを何杯も飲んでいた。日本の生中が500ml程、生大でも700ml程であるのと比較をすると、その大きさが想像しやすいのではないだろうか。私はビールが好きなので嬉しい限りだったが、人によってはちょっと大変かもしれない。本場ビールの街はやはり凄いなあと感じながら、私はビールと白ソーセージを美味しく頂いた。
*A Surprising Encounter with Beer Mugs in Munich’s Beer Halls
When you think of Munich, beer inevitably comes to mind, as it’s the city that hosts the world’s largest beer festival, Oktoberfest. I visited during the Easter holidays while studying for my postgraduate degree in the UK, so it wasn’t festival season, but trying authentic German beer was one of the highlights of my trip. Munich is home to many beer halls, and I visited Hofbräuhaus, a famous establishment founded in the 16th century. What surprised me most was the size of the beer mugs – the standard size is 1 liter! Looking around, I noticed that everyone was drinking several of these. To put that into perspective, a regular beer in Japan is about 500ml, and even a large one is only around 700ml. As a beer lover, I was thrilled, but it might be a bit much for some people. Enjoying my beer and white sausage, I couldn’t help but be amazed by the true beer.
