*ネッシーは本当にいるのか？
先日、半世紀振りにネッシーの本格的な捜索が行われたという記事を読んだ。胡散臭さとロマンが混在する話だが、私も昔にネス湖を訪れたことがあるので、その時のことを書いてみたい。
イギリスの大学に学部留学をしていた時、夏休みを利用して湖水地方やスコットランドの都市を巡る旅をした。その旅の中でインヴァネスという小さな町を訪れた。そこがネス湖のある町である。
その町を訪れた理由は勿論只一つ。ネッシーで有名なネス湖をこの目で見たかったからだ。私はドラえもんの世代なのだが、映画「のび太の恐竜」にもネス湖の話が出できたので、小さい頃からその名前は知っていた。
実際のネス湖は全長35km、幅2kmでかなり大きな湖である。畔にはネス湖エキシビションセンターという施設があり、ネッシーの捜索の歴史を写真や映像で展示していて雰囲気を盛り上げてくれた。しかし、肝心の湖はというと怪しい雰囲気は全く無い。傍にはアーカート城という古城があり、廃虚から眺めるネス湖はとても美しかった。訪れた日は6月で気候も良かったので、湖を眺めながらとても穏やかな一時を過ごすことが出来た。
さて、私がネッシーを見ることが出来たのかどうか・・・。それは皆さんのご想像にお任せをしようと思う。
*Is Nessie really out there?
I recently read an article about a full-scale search for Nessie, conducted for the first time in half a century. The story combines skepticism and romance, but having visited Loch Ness in the past, I'd like to share my experience.
While studying abroad at a university in the UK, I embarked on a trip to the Lake District and cities in Scotland during summer break. During this journey, I visited a small town called Inverness. This town is situated by Loch Ness, famous for Nessie.
The sole reason for visiting this town was, of course, to see the renowned Loch Ness monster with my own eyes. As a part of the Doraemon generation, I was familiar with the name since Nessie was mentioned in the movie "Doraemon: Nobita's Dinosaur."
The actual Loch Ness is a sizable lake, stretching 35 km in length and 2 km in width. Along its shore stands the Loch Ness Exhibition Centre, where the history of Nessie's search is displayed through photos and videos, setting the atmosphere. However, the lake itself lacks any mysterious aura. Nearby, the ruins of Urquhart Castle overlook the picturesque Loch Ness. I visited on a pleasant June day, allowing me to enjoy a serene moment gazing at the lake.
Now, whether I actually glimpsed Nessie or not... I'll leave that to your imagination.
