*その時その場所でしか出来ないこと
エジプトで最も有名な王様は黄金のマスクで知られるツタンカーメンだろう。但し、ツタンカーメン王の治世は10年程しかなく、無名な王であったが故に盗掘を免れたというのは何とも皮肉な話だ。
私はニュージーランドの旅行社が企画する多国籍のアドベンチャーツアーでエジプトのカイロからアスワンまでを縦断した。この写真は、その時にカイロの考古学博物館で撮影したものだ。黄金のマスクはメインの展示物なので個別に部屋が設けられており、多くの観光客で溢れていた。黄金のマスクはガラスケースに入れられてはいたが間近まで近づくことができ、前だけではなく後ろや下などガイドブックでは見られない様々な角度から見ることも出来た。
さて、この写真、今では撮影が中々困難なようだ。私が訪問したのは2003年。この時は無料で自由に撮影出来たので、観光客は皆隣に立って記念写真を撮っていた。しかし、現在は撮影禁止となってしまい、今となっては貴重な写真である。時の流れの中では、何がどうなるかはわからない。だからこそ、今できることを精一杯しておきたいと思う。
*Things that can only be done at that time and place
The most famous pharaoh in Egypt would be Tutankhamun, known for his golden mask. Ironically, due to his short reign of only about ten years and his relative obscurity, his tomb was spared from looting.
I embarked on a multinational adventure tour organized by a travel agency in New Zealand, traversing from Cairo to Aswan in Egypt. This photo was taken at the Cairo Museum of Antiquities during that time. As the main exhibit, the golden mask had its own dedicated room, bustling with tourists. Although it was enclosed in a glass case, we could get up close and observe it from various angles, not just the front but also the back and underneath, providing unique perspectives not found in guidebooks.
Now, capturing such a photo seems quite challenging. I visited in 2003 when photography was freely allowed, and visitors stood next to it to take commemorative pictures. However, photography is now prohibited, making this image even more precious. In the passage of time, we never know what will change. That's why it's important to make the most of what we can do now.
