*イギリスで一番美しい大学を訪れた話
日本の英語の授業では大学はUniversity、短大はCollegeと習ったのではないだろうか。アメリカのCommunity collegeなど確かに短大だがイギリスの場合は実は状況が異なるので少し解説をしようと思う。
イギリスで有名な大学と言えばオックスフォード大学やロンドン大学などがあるが、これらは複数の独立性の高いCollegeが集まって一つの大学群(University)を構成している。ここで言うCollegeは短大のような準学士ではなく学士号、修士号を授与しているので、位置付けとしては日本の大学、大学院とほぼ同じである。そして、同じ大学でもそのレベルはCollegeによって大きく異なっている。
例えば、古くは伊藤博文や夏目漱石が留学したロンドン大学はUniversity College Londonでこれは世界大学ランキングが20位程度で歴史のある超名門だ。他にもKings College London、、LSE(London School of Economics)、London Business Schoolなども世界的に評価が高い。私はロンドン大学大学院のRoyal HollowayというCollegeに合格をした。ロンドン大学と言うと凄そうに聞こえるが、このCollegeのレベルは世界大学ランキングだと300位程度で超名門と言う訳では無い。私はウェールズの大学院を選んだので進学はしなかったが、せっかく合格をしたのでどんな大学かは見ておこうと思い、ウェールズに向かう前にRoyal Hollowayを訪れた。実はここは「イギリスの美しい大学ランキング」では堂々の1位に輝いている大学なのだ。大学時代に留学した大学の建物は普通のコンクリートビルディングだったので、私は美しいイギリスらしいキャンパスには憧れがあった。私の進学先も同ランキングで10位に選ばれているので特に不満はなかったが、実際にRoyal Hollowayを訪れると確かに建物の装飾など美しく、正にイメージしていたイギリスという感じだった。留学先の選定では、本筋ではないかもしれないが建物なども重要なポイントの一つだとは思う。

I was accepted into Royal Holloway, a college of the University of London. Although Royal Holloway ranks around 300th globally, it is rated as the most beautiful university in England. I did not attend it as I chose a university in Wales, but I decided to visit before heading there. I had always dreamed of a beautiful English campus, especially since my chosen university is also ranked 10th in beauty. Visiting Royal Holloway confirmed its stunning architecture, embodying the ideal image of England I had in mind. While the architecture may not seem central to the decision-making process for studying abroad, it is indeed an important factor.
