何かの雑誌で森に続く石畳の道の写真を見た時、何と美しいのだろうと思った。調べてみるとそれは熊野古道の写真だった。名古屋からは比較的近いこともあり、折角なので熊野那智大社、熊野速玉大社、熊野本宮大社の熊野三社を訪れる旅をすることにした。
熊野は古来からの霊場でもあり、熊野の神のお使いは八咫烏となっている。八咫烏は足が三本あるということで日本サッカー代表のシンボルにもなっている。そのため熊野速玉大社にはその時の代表監督であるフィリップ･トルシエ監督がカタカナで「トルシエ」とサインをしたボールが飾ってあった。横に日本サッカー代表公認ボールという表示がなければ偽物かと思ってしまう微笑ましさだった。それは余談だが、三社を巡る道中はまさに写真で見たのと同じ景色が広がっていて神秘的な美しさを感じると共に、昔とあまり変わらないだろう風景にタイムスリップをしたような感覚を感じていた。

I once saw a photograph in a magazine of a stone-paved path disappearing into a dense forest, and I was struck by its beauty. After looking into it, I discovered it was part of the Kumano Kodo. Since it is relatively accessible from Nagoya, I decided to visit the three grand shrines of Kumano: Kumano Nachi Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and Kumano Hongu Taisha.
Kumano has long been considered a sacred spiritual site, and the divine messenger of its deities is the three-legged crow, Yatagarasu. This mythical bird is also the symbol of the Japan national football team. At Kumano Hayatama Taisha, I even found a signed soccer ball by the then national team coach, Philippe Troussier. Without the label confirming it as an official team ball, it might have seemed almost too charmingly simple to be real.
That aside, walking along the ancient paths between the shrines, I encountered the same दृश्य I had admired in the photograph. The scenery felt timeless, as if little had changed for centuries, and I had somehow stepped back into the past.
