*留学エージェントを使わずに独力でMBA受験をした話
私は26歳の時、イギリスの大学院にMBA留学をした。イギリスのMBA情報はそこまで多くは無いので、かなり昔のことだが私の受験体験を書いてみようと思う。
私の大学はイギリスでは名門と言われるラッセルグループの一員であり、研究力を表すRAEは最高の5点で英国でも4位にランクしていて教育の質はとても高い。世界大学ランキングでは長年90位～200位の間を推移しているので、オックスフォードやケンブリッジのような超名門ではないが、自身のレベルを考えると頑張った方だと感じている。
留学準備として、MBAの情報収集はPrinston Reviewの無料セミナーに参加し、大学の選定ではビジネスパラダイムというサイトが欧州に強かったのでそれを参考にした。今程情報が多くはない時代だったが、色々な大学の概要や入学要件が纏めてあったのでとても重宝をした。留学サイトで注意すべき事として、留学を斡旋しているエージェントのサイトには、現地ではそれ程評判が高くない大学が掲載されていることが多い。大学のレベルは世界大学ランキングなどの客観的なサイトでもチェックをした方が良いと感じる。
入学書類はメールで大学に依頼して郵送で取り寄せた。大学学部留学の時は依頼するところからエアメールだったので、時代の移り変わりを実感した。私の大学の場合、エッセイ、大学時代の成績、職歴、TOEFL又はIELTSによる英語力の証明、推薦状2通で審査をされた。イギリスはアメリカと違いGMATを要求しない大学もある。私の場合、TOEFLは600点（iBTだと100点レベル）で基準を越えていたがGMATが苦手だったので、GMATが必要ない大学の中で一番レベルの高い大学に行くという戦略を取った。大学の卒論も英語だったので、要件にはなかったがサポート資料として送付をした。推薦状は大学時代の恩師に依頼したが、私のコースは外国人、又は外国大学の博士号持ちの教授ばかりだったので、英語の推薦状を書くのに慣れていたのも良かったのだと思う。エッセイのネィティブチェックは、母校の大学のエクステンションカレッジの英会話に通っていたので、その先生に依頼をした。私のMBA受験は、エージェントを使わない代わりに色々工夫をしたが、その分自由度高く、且つ、費用も抑えることが出来たと思う。
応募後は結果が来るまで本当にドキドキで、毎晩仕事から帰ってメールを緊張しながら開く日々が続いた。合格メールが来た時は本当に嬉しくて、思わず叫んでしまったのを覚えている。
*My MBA Application Journey Without a Study Abroad Agent
When I was 26 years old, I pursued an MBA degree at a graduate school in the UK. Though there wasn't an abundance of information on UK MBA programs back then, I'd like to share my application experience.
My university was part of the prestigious Russell Group in the UK, boasting a top-tier research rating of 5 in the RAE, ranking fourth in the country, and maintaining a consistent position in global university rankings between 90 and 200. While not as renowned as Oxford or Cambridge, I felt it was a commendable choice given my capabilities.
For my study abroad preparations, I attended free seminars by Princeton Review for MBA information gathering. When it came to selecting universities, I relied on the European-focused website, Business Paradigm. Despite the limited information available at the time, it provided valuable summaries of various universities and their admission requirements. A crucial tip for prospective students on study abroad websites is to cross-reference the information with objective sources like world university rankings, as agent websites often feature universities with less favorable reputations.
I requested admission documents via email, a significant shift from the airmail process during my undergraduate studies, highlighting the changing times. For my university, the application consisted of an essay, undergraduate transcripts, work history, proof of English proficiency through TOEFL or IELTS, and two recommendation letters. Unlike the US, some UK universities don't require the GMAT. Given my aversion to GMAT, I strategically applied to the highest-ranking university among those not demanding the GMAT. Although my undergraduate thesis was in English (not a requirement but submitted as supplementary material), I believe having professors accustomed to writing recommendation letters in English, as my course was mainly taught by foreign professors with PhDs from foreign universities, worked in my favor. For native-checking my essay, I enlisted the help of an English conversation teacher at my alma mater's extension college, which had me well-prepared.
My MBA application, without the use of an agent, involved careful planning, but it allowed me greater flexibility and cost control. The anticipation and anxiety during the wait for results were intense. I vividly recall the joy and excitement when the acceptance email finally arrived, prompting an exuberant shout of delight.
