旅行先を考える時、海か山かという話があるが、私は海も山も好きである。ただ、山というよりも深い森や大樹には心惹かれるものがある。これは子供時代に見た「天空の城ラピュタ」や「もののけ姫」など宮崎駿のアニメの影響もあるのではないかと思う。
そんな思いもあり、私は20代の頃に屋久島を訪れた。屋久島といえば樹齢3000年の縄文杉が有名だが、その道中の森も深くとても美しい。屋久島は雨が多いことから苔の生育も早く、実は苔の聖地とも言われている。触ってみると分厚くフカフカという感触だった。また、深い森であることから大樹も多く、その中でもウィルソン株という樹齢2000年の屋久杉の切り株がとても印象深かった。切り株は中が大きな空洞になっていて入ることができ、樹の内部から森を見上げるというのはとても神秘的な感覚だった。屋久島はまさにリアルなもののけ姫の世界だと思う。好きなアニメがあれば、是非その聖地を訪れてみることをお勧めする。
