この生き物は一体何だ？？？スコットランドのスカイ島をサイクリングをしていた時、私はコレに出会った。コレは動物園のように柵や檻もない道の傍らで、ただ静かにその場にたたずんでいた。私はその不思議な生き物を記録しておこうと思い、刺激をしないようにそっとカメラのシャッターを切った。
後から調べてみるとコレはハイランド牛という「牛」らしかった。しかし、生き物の名前が判明しても、私の頭の中にある牛は白黒の乳牛や茶色や黒色の肉牛しか無かったので、牛だと言われても牛とは認識が出来なかった。ただ、ハイランドに住む人々にはこの牛がスタンダードなのだろう。
名前はとても便利で、その物の形状などの詳しい説明をしなくても、コミュニケーションをする上で共通の物を思い浮かべることか出来るようになる偉大な発明である。ただ、このように同じ名前でも私の常識の外にあるものが存在することを知ると、他人と会話をして分かり合えているように思えても、意外と見ている世界は違うのかもしれないと思っている。

What on earth is this creature??? While cycling through the Isle of Skye in Scotland, I encountered this mysterious being. Unlike in a zoo, there were no fences or cages—it simply stood quietly by the roadside. Curious yet cautious, I gently pressed the shutter of my camera, making sure not to startle it.
Later, I looked it up and found out that it was a Highland cow—a cow, apparently. But even after learning its name, I couldn’t associate it with the cows I had in mind, which were either black-and-white dairy cows or brown and black beef cattle. To the people living in the Highlands, though, this breed must be the norm.
Names are an incredible invention, allowing us to communicate without lengthy descriptions. However, encountering something beyond my own assumptions made me wonder—when we talk to others, we may think we understand each other, but perhaps we are seeing completely different worlds.
