義父母がイタリア旅行から帰ってきた。ヴェネツィアからフィレンツェ、ローマ、南のナポリまでイタリアを周遊する2週間のツアーだった。どこが印象に残っているかを尋ねると、ローマのコロッセオが想像以上に大きくて驚いたと言っていた。やはりテレビや写真で見るのと現地に行って実物を目の当たりにするのは違うのだろう。
さて、私もローマはイギリス留学時代の春休みに訪れたことがある。ローマには数多くの遺跡や歴史的建造物がある。たがら、街を歩いていると突然それらが目の前に現れるのだ。しかも至る所に2000年級の建物がゴロゴロとあり、ローマ帝国から繋がる歴史の重みが感じられ本当に驚愕をした。コロッセオは私も訪れて中にも入場をした。元々は剣闘士達の闘技場だったので迷路のような構造の痕跡を上から眺めながら、過去の姿を想像して歴史の流れを感じ楽しんでいた。ただ、それは昔の話。現在ではというと猫の住処になっているようで、コロッセオの周りでは闘技場の中にいる猫を写した癒し系の絵葉書が沢山売られていた。時代は変わるものだなあと思いながら、平和な現代に生まれて良かったと改めて感じていた。

My parents-in-law recently returned from a two-week tour around Italy, traveling from Venice to Florence, Rome, and finally down to Naples. When I asked what impressed them most, they said the Colosseum was far larger than they had imagined. Seeing it in person is clearly different from viewing it on TV or in photos.
I also visited Rome during my spring break while studying in the UK. The city is full of ruins and historic structures that suddenly appear before you as you wander the streets. Everywhere you turn, buildings that have stood for nearly two millennia remind you of the immense weight of history. I visited the Colosseum too, peering down at the remains of its maze-like arena and imagining what it once looked like. Today, however, it seems to be home to cats; postcard stands are filled with cute images of them lounging inside the ancient arena. Times do change, and I felt grateful to be living in such a peaceful era.
