日本には○○スカラ座というような映画館や劇場が各地にある。その名前の由来となっているのは、イタリアのミラノにあるスカラ座だ。スカラ座はウィーン国立歌劇場、ニューヨークのメトロポリタン歌劇場と共に世界三大歌劇場の一つと言われている。私はイギリス学部留学中の春休みにミラノを訪れた。あまり芸術に詳しい訳ではなかったが、何となくスカラ座という名前は聞いたことがあった。そこでせっかくなので当日券で安いチケットを購入しオペラを鑑賞することにした。演目はチャイコフスキーのオネーギンというものだった。私の大好きな映画「プリティウーマン」の中でリチャード・ギアが「誰かが初めてオペラを見る時の反応は、とてもドラマティックだ。愛するようになる人もいれば、嫌う人もいる。もし愛するようになれば、その人はずっとオペラを愛し続ける。だが、愛せない人は、楽しみ方を学んだとしても、魂の一部にはならない」と言っていたが、残念ながら私は魂の一部とはならなかったようだ。それでも本場で最高峰のオペラを観たというのはとても素晴らしい経験だったと思う。

In Japan, there are many cinemas and theaters named something like “○○ Scala.” The origin of that name is La Scala in Milan, Italy. Along with the Vienna State Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in New York, La Scala is considered one of the world’s top three opera houses. I visited Milan during my spring break while studying in the UK. I wasn’t particularly knowledgeable about the arts, but I had at least heard the name La Scala before. So, I decided to make the most of the opportunity and bought an inexpensive ticket for a same-day performance. The opera was Eugene Onegin by Tchaikovsky. In my favorite movie Pretty Woman, Richard Gere says, “People’s reactions to opera the first time they see it are very dramatic. They either love it or they hate it. If they love it, they will always love it. If they don’t, they may learn to appreciate it, but it will never become part of their soul.” Sadly, it didn’t become part of my soul—but still, seeing a world-class opera at La Scala was an unforgettable experience.
