先日、新たな教皇としてレオ14世が即位をし、テレビでもバチカン市国のコンクラーベの様子が放送されていた。私はイギリス学部留学中の春休みにバチカン市国を訪れたが、バチカン市国はキリスト教 ローマ・カトリックの総本山である。私はキリスト教徒ではないが、大学がカトリック系の学校だったので、授業でキリスト教概論というものを勉強したことがある。母校は神父様が学長を務めていたが、バチカン市国にはその大元締めのローマ教皇がいるので、信者ではないがちょっと興味があった。調べてみると毎週日曜日の正午にローマ教皇はサン・ピエトロ広場で挨拶をされるとのこと。中々無い機会なので見に行くことにした。バチカン市国には平日と日曜日の2回行ったが、日曜日はローマ教皇の祝福を目的にした人達が世界中から大勢集まり、平日は人が疎らだった広場が人で埋まっていた。当時の教皇はヨハネ・パウロ二世だったが、正午になると窓から顔を出して集まった信者に祝福の言葉を贈っており、贈られた人々は歓喜の歓声をあげていた。日本にいると宗教について考える機会が少ないが、人それぞれ信じる宗教は違う。自分がそれを信じるかどうかは別として、客観的な視点でそれを信じる人達がいるということを認め受け入れることが大切だと感じた出来事だった。

I visited Vatican City during spring break while studying in the UK. As the center of the Roman Catholic Church, it holds great significance for Christians. I’m not a Christian myself, but I had taken a course on Christian studies at my Catholic university, where even the president was a priest. Naturally, I was curious to see the Pope—the leader of the entire Catholic Church. I learned that every Sunday at noon, the Pope gives a greeting in St. Peter’s Square, so I decided to go. I visited Vatican City twice—once on a weekday and once on a Sunday. While the square was quiet during the week, it was packed on Sunday with people from all over the world gathered for the Pope’s blessing. At the time, Pope John Paul II appeared at the window and addressed the crowd. Living in Japan, we rarely reflect on religion, but this experience reminded me of the importance of recognizing and respecting what others believe, even if we don't share the same faith.
