スコットランドの北部はハイランド地方と呼ばれ、名前からもファンタジーっぽい雰囲気が漂っている。ハリーポッターなどファンタジー映画の舞台にもなっていて、荒々しい山々や湖など神秘的な景観が広がっている。そのハイランド地方にスカイ島という島がある。空の島と訳してしまいそうだが、綴りはSkyではなく古代語に由来をするSkyeであり、雲の島、又は翼の島と言われている。私はイギリス学部留学中の夏休みに湖水地方とスコットランドを巡る旅をしていた時、インヴァネスでネス湖を見た後にスカイ島を訪れた。
結論から言うとスカイ島には何も無い。荒々しい自然が広がっているだけだ。しかし、その景観は神秘的で私にはとても魅力的だった。島には公共交通機関がないので、私はブロードフォードからエルゴールまでの25kmをサイクリングをしながら雄大な自然を満喫した。住んでいる地域にもよるが、日本にいると街と街が隣接しているので、何も無いところというのは中々無い。だから、このような大自然を目にすると、改めて私達は町や国ではなく地球という星に住んでいるのだと感じさせられるように思う。

During my summer break while studying in the UK, I traveled through the Lake District and Scotland. After visiting Loch Ness in Inverness, I made my way to Skye. To put it simply, there is nothing on Skye—only vast, untamed nature. Yet, its mystical beauty captivated me. With no public transport, I cycled 25 km from Broadford to Elgol, immersing myself in the wild scenery. This untouched landscape reminded me that we don’t just live in cities or nations—we live on Earth.
