最近娘が高校生になって、英語の授業でわからないところなどを聞いくるのでたまに教えている。父親としては貴重な触れ合いタイムであり、とても幸せな時間だ。市販の単語帳を使い試験範囲のところをクイズ形式で出題したりしているが、その時に改めて気になったことがある。それは単語帳だとカテゴリー毎に似た意味の単語が集めてあり、同じ日本語訳で違う英単語が3つも4つも続いていて、単語帳だけではその違いが全くわからないのだ。では、それを理解するにはどうしたら良いかと言うと本当は英英辞典を使うのがベストだ。簡単なところで例を挙げるとseeとwatchはどちらも日本語では「見る」という訳だ。但し、seeは英英辞典ではTo notice or become aware of something using your eyes.と説明され、意識せずに視界に入るものを見る、という意味なのに対し、watchはTo look at something for a period of time, especially something that is changing or moving.で意識的に注視するという意味だ。だから、I am watching TVとは言うがI am seeing TVとは言わないのだ。
だから、本当は単語を単語帳で覚えるのではなく、そのニュアンスを同時に覚えるためにも長文の中で覚えるのが望ましい。その時に大事なのは逆説的だが、多少わからない単語があったとしても、気にせずに読み進めることが重要だ。日本語で小説を読む時などを思い浮かべて欲しいが、多少意味がわからない単語があったとしても、全体の意味を理解する上であまり困ってはいないはずだ。最近の大学受験の共通テストやTOEICなどでは読むスピードが重視される傾向にあるので、一つ一つ単語帳で正確な意味を覚えるよりは、ニュアンスや用法も含めて長文の中で覚える方が良いと私は感じている。そうは言ってもある程度英語力が上がってこないとそれは難しいので、さてどうしたものか、と思いながら、娘の単語練習に付き合っている今日この頃である。
