*ユーレイルパスという魔法の切符とトーマスクック時刻表という夢の地図
オーストリアのザルツブルクと言えば、モーツァルトやサウンドオブミュージックで有名な街だ。私はイギリス大学学部留学中の冬休みにウィーンから列車で訪れた。私が訪れたのは冬でザルツブルクは雪が降っていたが、山嶺の街は細い小道から雪のアルプスの山々が見えて何とも言えない美しさがあった。
ヨーロッパにはユーレイルパスというものがあって、若者向けは格安の値段でヨーロッパ内の列車が乗り放題である。今のようにアプリで時刻表や乗り継ぎなどわからない時代だったので、トーマスクック社の時刻表を書店で購入し、予め路線と列車の時刻を調べておく必要があった。ただ、ヨーロッパは国を跨いで列車が運行していて、その時刻表を読み解けば何処にでも行けるので、計画を立てる時もワクワクして楽しかった記憶がある。
ウィーンからザルツブルクに向かう列車のコンパートメントでは、休暇で一人旅に来ていた若い女性と同室となった。異国の一人旅で不安そうだったのでザルツブルクまでの道中で話をしながら彼女の泊まるユースホステルまで案内をした。旅のロマンスなどが生まれることはなかったが、旅先では自分も色々と助けてもらったこともあるので、私も困っている人には優しくするようにしていた。自分が受けた優しさをまた次の他人へ与えることで、優しさの輪が世界に広がっていくと良いなあと心から願っている。

When you think of Salzburg, Austria, you think of a city famous for Mozart and The Sound of Music. I visited during the winter break of my undergraduate study in the UK, traveling by train from Vienna. It was winter when I visited, and although Salzburg was covered in snow, the mountainous town offered a breathtaking beauty with the snow-covered Alps visible from its narrow streets.
In Europe, there is something called the Eurail Pass, which allows unlimited train travel within Europe at a cheap price for young people. Back then, when information like timetables and connections wasn't readily available in apps, I had to purchase the Thomas Cook timetable from a bookstore and research routes and train schedules in advance. However, since trains ran across countries in Europe, deciphering the timetable meant I could go anywhere, making the planning process exciting and enjoyable.
On the train compartment from Vienna to Salzburg, I shared the room with a young woman traveling alone on holiday. Sensing her anxiety about solo travel in a foreign land, I struck up a conversation and ended up guiding her to the youth hostel where she was staying in Salzburg. While no romance blossomed from the trip, I believed in reciprocating the kindness I received while traveling, hoping that by passing on kindness to others, a circle of kindness would spread throughout the world.
