*憧れのウィンブルドン
私は学生時代はテニス部だった。テニスの大会と言えばグランドスラムと言われるウィンブルドン、全仏、全豪、全米の四大大会が有名である。イギリスに留学する時には、ウィンブルドンは絶対に見たいと思っていた。
そこでタイ人、インド人のフラットメイトと見に行くことになった。チケットは当日券というものがあり、早朝から並べば入場できるということで、かなり朝早かったがワクワクしながら会場に向かった。長蛇の列ではあったが道沿いには土産の屋台なども出ていて、特に退屈することは無かった。
入場すると試合の予定表がボードに表示されていた。中にはチケットの必要なものもあったが、普通の試合は自由にどれでも見に行くことが出来た。しかも、コートの横まで行くことが出来て、まるで部活の試合を見るような近距離で観戦することが出来た。写真はアメリカのリンゼイ・ダベンポート選手と日本の浅越しのぶ選手の試合。近くで見るラリーは迫力があり、日本に帰ったら部活の友人に絶対自慢しようと思い感激をしていた。もう20年程前の話なので今はどうかわからないが、四大大会の試合を安く間近で見ることができてとてもラッキーだったと思う。
*Dreaming of Wimbledon
I used to be part of the tennis team during my student days. When it comes to tennis tournaments, the Grand Slam events like Wimbledon, the French Open, the Australian Open, and the US Open are renowned. When I was studying in the UK, I had always dreamed of witnessing Wimbledon firsthand.
So, I decided to go watch it with my Thai and Indian flatmates. There were tickets available on the day itself, and although it meant getting up early in the morning, we were excited as we headed to the venue. The queue was long, but along the way, there were souvenir stalls, keeping us entertained.
Upon entering, the schedule of matches was displayed on a board. While some matches required tickets, we could freely attend regular ones. Moreover, we could get close to the courts, making it feel like watching a school sports event. The photo I took was of the match between American player Lindsay Davenport and Japan's Shinobu Asagoe. The rallies up close were intense, and I couldn't wait to brag to my friends back home about this experience. This was nearly 20 years ago, so I'm not sure if it's still the same, but being able to watch Grand Slam matches affordably and up close was incredibly fortunate, I think.
