*行かないとわからないこと
ドイツにロマンチック街道という観光ルートがある。中世の美しい街やシンデレラ城のモチーフになったノイシュヴァンシュタイン城があり、カップルにも人気のコースだ。私は大学院留学中の春休み、そこを一人で孤独に旅をした。一人でも十分に楽しめたので、一人旅を検討している方は安心してほしい。
さて、街道沿いのアルプス山麓にヴィース教会という世界遺産がある。世界遺産好きの私としてはワクワクしながらそこへ向かったのだが、この教会は草原の中にひっそりと佇んでおり、大きさもこじんまりとしていて、少し拍子抜けした感じだった。
イマイチな場所かなと思いながら中に入ると、その予想は良い意味で覆された。教会内部は別世界で荘厳という言葉がピッタリだった。ヨーロッパの美しい教会の多くは外観も豪華だが、これ程内外のギャップがあったのは初めてでとても印象的だった。田舎の小さな街にこんな美しく豪華な教会があるというギャップが一番の見所だか、この感覚は実際に訪れてみないとわからない。だからこそ旅は面白いと思う。
*Discovering the Unseen: Things You Won't Know Until You Go
In Germany, there is a tourist route called the Romantic Road. It features picturesque medieval towns and the Neuschwanstein Castle, known as the inspiration for Cinderella's castle, making it a popular choice for couples. During my spring break while studying abroad, I embarked on a solo journey along this route. It was an enjoyable experience even by myself, so for those considering solo travel, rest assured.
Now, along the Alpine foothills of the road, there is a World Heritage site called Wies Church. As a lover of UNESCO sites, I eagerly made my way there. However, the church stood quietly amidst the meadows, with a rather modest size that left me slightly underwhelmed.
With mixed expectations, I stepped inside, and my assumptions were pleasantly shattered. The interior of the church was a grand and awe-inspiring world of its own. While many beautiful European churches boast ornate exteriors, this was the first time I had experienced such a striking contrast between the interior and exterior. The stark juxtaposition of a small countryside town harboring such beauty and grandeur became the highlight. This sensation, however, is something you won't grasp until you actually visit. That's why I believe travel is so fascinating.
