*鐘の名は
ビッグ・ベン。ロンドンの観光名所として有名だが、これは実は時計台の中にある鐘の名である。私は幼い時にシャーロック・ホームズを読んで、時計台のある街、鐘の音の聞こえる街に憧れていた。ロンドンは正にその舞台でもあり、ビッグ・ベンのウェストミンスターチャイムを実際に聞いた時は感動をしたのを覚えている。ロンドンを去る時も名残惜しくて、最後にもう一度次の鐘が鳴るまでと思い、中々その場を離れることが出来なかった。
あれから歳を重ねて、家族を持ち、家も購入をした。今、我が家のリビングには、結婚祝いで頂いた欧州製の掛け時計が飾ってあり、時間毎に美しい鐘の音を聞かせてくれる。音色は違うが鐘の音を聞くと私はロンドンを思い出す。
最近はネットやSNSに写真や情報が溢れていて、別に旅に行く必要はないと感じるかもしれない。しかし、旅は五感の全てで感じるものであり、それこそが旅の醍醐味だと私は思う。
*The Name of the Bell
Its name is Big Ben. It's famous as a tourist attraction in London, but it's actually the name of the bell inside the clock tower. When I was young and read Sherlock Holmes, I admired cities with clock towers and the sound of bells. London was truly that stage, and I remember being moved when I actually heard the Westminster Chimes of Big Ben. Even when I left London, I was reluctant to leave and thought of staying until the next bell rang.
Since then, I've grown older, started a family, and bought a house. Now, in the living room of my home, there's a European-made pendulum clock we received as a wedding gift, which plays beautiful bell sounds every hour. The tone is different, but when I hear the sound of bells, it reminds me of London.
These days, the internet and social media are overflowing with photos and information, and you might feel like there's no need to travel. However, I believe that travel is about experiencing everything with all your senses, and that's the true essence of traveling.
