*旅を楽しむための知識の必要性
旅をする時はその場所の知識があった方が楽しめる。当たり前のことだが、それを実感した時があったのでそのことについて書いてみたい。
イギリスの大学学部留学中の夏休み、私は1週間スペイン人の友人の家に遊びに行った。友人はバルセロナに住んでおり、滞在中は色々な場所に連れて行ってくれて非常に有難かった。バルセロナには多くの観光地があり友人がガイドをしてくれたのだが、その中でサッカーのFCバルセロナのメインスタジアム カンプ・ノウにも連れて行ってくれた。
FCバルセロナと言えばヨーロッパ最強チームの一つで、メッシやネイマール、クライフやマラドーナなど歴代のレジェンド選手が勢揃いのチーム。そのメインスタジアムはサッカー好きの人達には聖地のようなものである。今でこそTVでも多く取り上げられ、様々な情報が溢れているが、私が訪れたのは1996年。日本は1994年にJリーグが開幕したばかりで海外のサッカーは全くメジャーではなかったし、私の好きな「キャプテン翼」だってまだスペイン編は始まっていない時だった。だから、残念なことにその時の私はバルサについて全く知らなかったのだ。併設された博物館で「これは○○の靴」「これは○○の時のボール」と熱く語る友人の話をとても興味無く聞いていた。
あれから時が流れて海外サッカーが有名になり、バルサやカンプ・ノウが話題になると、ミーハーな私はあの時は勿体なかったなあと後悔をした。やはり知識というのは旅を楽しむ上でとても重要だと思う。
*The Importance of Knowledge for Enjoying Travel
Having knowledge about a place enhances the joy of traveling, a rather obvious but personally realized aspect that I'd like to discuss. During my summer break while studying at a university in the UK, I spent a week visiting a Spanish friend. He lived in Barcelona and graciously took me to various places during my stay. While Barcelona boasts many tourist spots, one that stood out was the Camp Nou, the main stadium of FC Barcelona.
FC Barcelona is renowned as one of Europe's top football teams, featuring legendary players like Messi, Neymar, Cruyff, and Maradona. The main stadium is akin to a pilgrimage site for football enthusiasts. However, my visit took place in 1996, a time when Japanese football had just introduced the J-League in 1994, making foreign football far from mainstream. Even my favorite "Captain Tsubasa" had not yet ventured into the Spanish arc. Regrettably, I knew nothing about Barça back then. I listened disinterestedly to my friend's passionate tales of shoes and balls displayed at the attached museum.
As time passed and foreign football gained fame, Barça and Camp Nou became topics of conversation. I, the casual fan, couldn't help but regret not appreciating the experience fully back then. Knowledge, indeed, plays a crucial role in enjoying travel.
