「アルハンブラを見てから死ぬべきだ」イギリス学部留学中、バルセロナ出身の友人と話をしていた時に言われた言葉だ。そこまで言い切るとはどんな素晴らしい所なのだろう、と俄然私はその場所に興味を持った。夏休みに友人を訪れた時はバルセロナにしか行かなかったので、残念ながら行くことは出来なかったが、その機会は新婚旅行の時に訪れた。
アルハンブラ宮殿はスペイン南部のグラナダにある世界遺産だ。私にとっての新婚旅行のハイライトの一つで、いよいよアルハンブラ宮殿を見られるとワクワクしていた。宮殿はイスラム建築の最高峰と言われており、天井や壁に施された繊細な装飾はヨーロッパの宮殿とは異なるが、その美しさに圧倒された。趣は全く違うが、日本の日光東照宮の豪華絢爛かつ精緻な美にも通じるものがあるように感じた。「日光を見ずして結構と言うな」など日本にも良く似た言葉があるが、そのひとつを見ることが出来たのはとても幸運だった。ただ、まだまだ見たいところが沢山あるので、当分死ぬ訳には行かないと思っている。

"You must see the Alhambra before you die." These were the words of a friend from Barcelona when we were studying in the UK. I was struck—what kind of place could inspire such a statement? Naturally, I became very curious.
When I visited my friend during summer break, I only made it to Barcelona, so unfortunately, I couldn't see the Alhambra then. But the chance finally came during our honeymoon.
The Alhambra is a UNESCO World Heritage site in Granada, southern Spain. It became one of the highlights of our trip, and I was thrilled to finally see it. Known as a masterpiece of Islamic architecture, the palace’s intricate ceilings and walls were unlike anything I'd seen in Europe—absolutely breathtaking.
Though different in style, it reminded me of the ornate beauty of Japan’s Nikko Toshogu Shrine. Just as the Japanese say, "Don’t say magnificent until you’ve seen Nikko," I felt lucky to witness one of the world’s must-see places. Still, with so many wonders left, I have no intention of dying anytime soon.
