Am I the only one who feels a certain romance in the word “ancient city”? The atmosphere differs by country, but strolling through such places while imagining the history and lives of those who once lived there is a real joy.
Toledo in Spain, which we visited on our honeymoon, was one such city. With a history dating back to Roman times, Toledo has long been a place of significance. While sights like the grand Alcázar fortress and the Toledo Cathedral are impressive, what I loved most was the old town itself.
Due to its dry climate, the city lacks greenery, and from a viewpoint, you see a sea of reddish-brown rooftops stretching across the landscape, with the massive Alcázar towering above it all. Thinking that this view likely hasn’t changed much over the centuries gave me a strange and wonderful feeling—almost as if I had slipped back in time.
