July 2005, Barcelona, Spain

*Why Do the Facades of the Sagrada Família Lack a Unified Style?
The Sagrada Família has three grand entrances, known as facades: the Nativity, Passion, and Glory Facades. The Nativity Facade, with its intricate and highly detailed sculptures, was the only one largely completed under Gaudí’s direct supervision during his lifetime. It is filled with organic forms and rich symbolism that reflect his unique artistic vision.
In contrast, the Passion Facade looks stark, angular, and minimalist. The reason is simple: it was designed by a different artist. Although Gaudí left overall plans for the facade, he did not create detailed designs for its sculptures. After his death, and following the destruction of parts of the basilica and his workshop during the Spanish Civil War, much of the original material was lost. The sculptural work was eventually entrusted to the Catalan artist Josep Maria Subirachs, who interpreted Gaudí’s vision in his own distinctive style.
The third entrance, the Glory Facade, is still under construction and will become the basilica’s main entrance when completed. When people think of the Sagrada Família, they naturally think of Gaudí. Yet the project has spanned well over a century and involved generations of architects, artists, and craftsmen. Perhaps because of this, I felt a certain lack of stylistic unity when I stood before the building itself. That does not diminish its greatness in any way. Still, as I admired the delicate carvings of the Nativity Facade, I found myself wondering what the basilica might have looked like if Gaudí had been able to oversee every detail from beginning to end.
