友人がロンドンマラソンに出場をしたようで、SNSにロンドンの写真や現地の様子を投稿していた。ロンドンの風景は馴染み深かったが、驚いたのはその物価だ。缶ジュース￡2.5(530円)、地下鉄初乗り￡7(1500円)、レストランでフィッシュアンドチップスを食べると￡20～25(5000円～6000円)らしい。私が留学したのは20年以上前で当時と比べると物価は30%程上がっているが、一番影響が大きいのは円安だ。2002年と比べると￡は約180円→約215円、＄は約120円→約160円、€は約120円→約185円で物価上昇とも組み合わさり、いつの間にか円の価値は半分くらいになってしまった。私は子供の頃、祖父から戦前戦後の昭和恐慌でお金が紙切れになったと聞かされており、これは私の邪推かもしれないが、政府としては国の借金返済の為にある程度想定の範囲内なのではないかと感じてしまう。そして、その対価は国民資産の目減りと困窮だ。先を考えると非常に暗い気持ちになる。
さて、友人も話をしていたフィッシュアンドチップスだが、実はこれはイギリスでは伝統的な労働者階級の食べ物でレストランで食べるような小洒落たものではない。写真が本場のフィッシュアンドチップスで、塩とビネガー、脂がギトギトなのがスタンダードだ。そして、それが何とも美味いのだ。中々旅がしにくい時代になってきたが、いつかまたこの不健康な食事を本場で思いっきり頬張りたい。

A friend of mine recently ran the London Marathon and shared photos and updates from London on social media. The scenery felt familiar to me, but what truly surprised me was the cost of living. The authentic version is simple: generously salted, drenched in vinegar, and delightfully greasy. And somehow, that’s exactly what makes it so delicious. Travel may be becoming more difficult, but I still hope that one day I can return and enjoy this unapologetically indulgent meal in its true home.
