私は爬虫類は大嫌いだ。にも関わらず何でこんな写真を撮ったのかと言うと、理由は単純で好奇心とミーハーだからである。では、この写真をどこで撮ったかと言うとベトナムだ。
私は20代の頃にベトナムのホーチミンとハノイを旅行で訪れた。ホーチミンではメコンデルタを巡る現地発着のジャングルツアーに参加をした。行き先であるミトーはメコン川クルーズの観光地で、観光客向けの商売が色々ある。その中で大きなニシキヘビを首に巻き付かせてくれるというサービス？があった。繰り返すが私は爬虫類は大嫌いで、日本では触ることも絶対にしたくない。でも、この時は好奇心とせっかくの機会だから、という気持ちが勝ってしまった。結果、他のツアー参加者と一緒に首に巻き付けて写真を撮った。この写真では顔を隠しているので見えないが、私はとてもひきつった顔で写っている。それ以降も日本で蛇を触ることはないが、好奇心の持つ力というものは面白いものだと思う。

In the end, I joined the other tourists and posed for a photo. Although my face is hidden in the picture, I remember wearing a very strained expression.
I still have no intention of touching snakes back home, but the power of curiosity is truly fascinating.
