世界三大美術館と言えば、パリのルーブル美術館、サンクトペテルブルクのエルミタージュ美術館、そしてニューヨークのメトロポリタン美術館だ。私は美術館は結構好きなので、NYを訪れた際には当然訪れた。1日しか時間が取れなかっとので、その全てをゆっくり見ることは出来なかったが、確かに古今東西の膨大なコレクションには圧倒をされた。ただ、ヨーロッパの国々で訪れた様々な美術館を思い出すとクオリティという面では圧倒的とまでは言い難い。何故、ここまで評価が高いを考えてみると、この膨大なコレクションが大西洋を越えたアメリカという地にあることが凄いのではないだろうか。建国から250年でここまでの富を築いたアメリカの凄さを改めて感じた。

When people speak of the world’s three greatest museums, they usually name the Louvre in Paris, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. As someone who genuinely enjoys museums, visiting the Met was an obvious choice when I traveled to New York. Unfortunately, I only had one day, so it was impossible to explore everything at a leisurely pace. Even so, I was overwhelmed by the sheer scale and diversity of its collection, which spans civilizations, regions, and centuries.
That said, when I recalled the many museums I had visited across Europe, it was hard to say that the Met’s individual masterpieces were overwhelmingly superior in quality. So why is its reputation so high? The answer, I believe, lies in its location. This vast collection exists not in Europe, but across the Atlantic, in the United States. Realizing that a nation with a history of only about 250 years has amassed such cultural wealth made me once again appreciate the remarkable power and ambition of America.
