I belong to the generation that grew up watching The Ultra Quiz. Every year on television, announcer Fukumoto shouted, “Do you want to go to New York?” as contestants set their sights on the Statue of Liberty. Because of that, the Statue of Liberty is the very first image that comes to my mind whenever I think of New York.
During the winter break while I was studying at a graduate school in the UK, I visited a friend who lived in New York and stayed for about a week. We explored many famous sights, but the Statue of Liberty was the one place I absolutely wanted to see. When I asked my friend how to get there, I learned that you have to take a ferry. The statue was originally built as a lighthouse, so it stands offshore, a little away from Manhattan. I was slightly surprised, as I had never really imagined its location beyond its overwhelming size.
Perhaps because it was December and bitterly cold, there were not many visitors. That quietness allowed me to stand there in silence, lost in thought. Remembering the scene in Titanic where Rose gazes at the Statue of Liberty, I felt deeply that, for The Ultra Quiz and for immigrants, the statue represents something far greater than its physical scale.
