イギリスは紅茶の国として有名だ。イギリス留学時代には毎朝紅茶を飲んでいたが、スーパーで買う普通のものでも美味しかった気がする。もう少し正確に言うのであれば、イギリスで飲む紅茶が美味しいのではないかと思う。理由は色々あるのだろうが、私が当時聞いたのは水の質である。水には軟水と硬水がある。水に含まれるカルシウムとマグネシウムの量で分けられており、日本の水は軟水、ヨーロッパや北米の水は硬水である。イギリスは地層に石灰岩が多く、その成分が溶けだすことでカルシウムが多くなるようだ。普通に飲料水として飲む分にはあまりわからないが、紅茶などには硬水が合うのだと言う。確かにイギリスでお土産に買ってきた紅茶を日本で飲んでも味の違いを感じたので単に雰囲気だけの問題ではないのだろう。
ちなみにお土産として買うのなら断然Fortnum & Masonの紅茶をお勧めする。少し高いが王室御用達であり、パッケージも種類も豊富で選ぶだけで楽しくなるはずだ。そして、日本で本場の味を楽しみたければevianなどの硬水のミネラルウォーターを使って紅茶を入れるとイギリスの味に近づけることができる。紅茶好きな方は是非一度試してみてほしい。

In the UK, limestone-rich geology allows calcium to dissolve into the water, making it harder. While this difference is subtle when drinking water alone, hard water is said to suit black tea particularly well. I did notice that the same tea I brought back as a souvenir tasted different when brewed in Japan, so it is likely not just a matter of atmosphere.
If you are buying tea as a souvenir, I highly recommend Fortnum & Mason.
