今、シンガポールというとアジアで最も先進的な都会というイメージがあるのではないだろうか。私は20年以上前に大学院留学の為にロンドンに向かう際、乗り換えの合間に少しだけ訪れたことがある。その時はキャセイパシフィック航空を利用したがシンガポールでの待ち時間が7時間くらいあった。当時は待ち時間が4時間以上あると航空会社が主催する市内のショートトリップに無料で参加をすることが出来た。私は夜のツアーに参加し、有名なマーライオンを水上から一目だけ見ることが出来た。当時は日本の方が進んでいて見たいものもあまりなかったのでそれで十分だと感じていた。しかし、あれから20数年、日本との立ち位置は逆転し、大分差がついてしまったように感じる。今ならマリーナベイサンズやガーデンズ・バイ・ザ・ベイなどの近未来的なスポットも沢山ある。日本の失われた20年のリアルをまざまざと見せつけられているようで少し悲しい気持ちを感じるが、また行く機会があれば今度は是非時間をかけて訪れてみたい。

When you think of Singapore today, you probably picture a futuristic, bustling metropolis, one of the most advanced cities in Asia. Over two decades ago, on a layover en route to London for grad school, I had a brief glimpse of the city. I was flying with Cathay Pacific, and with a seven-hour wait, I took a free short tour organized by the airline. I chose a night tour and caught a brief glimpse of the Merlion from the water. Back then, Japan felt more advanced, so I didn't feel the need to see more.
Fast forward over 20 years, and the roles have completely reversed. Singapore now feels much further ahead of Japan. There are so many new, futuristic spots like Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay. Seeing this stark difference is a tangible reminder of Japan's "lost decades," which makes me a bit sad. Still, if I get the chance to visit again, I would love to explore it properly this time.
