*英国の大学院の卒業式はどのようものか？
私は20年以上前だか英国の大学院を卒業した。英国大学の卒業式の情報は少ないので、今回は私の経験を少し書いてみようと思う。
日本や米国などの大学院は2年間だが、英国の大学院は1年間である。9月に始まり修士論文の提出が1年後の9月だ。ただ、論文の採点があるので直ぐに卒業式がある訳ではなく、翌年の7月が卒業式となる。私の留学先大学は学部、院合わせた全学年では3万人の学生がいるが、卒業式は皆がもう一度大学に戻ってくる日ということで、街は卒業式ムード一色だ。当日はガウンをシティホールで受け取って着せてもらい、ガウン姿で街中を歩きながら会場へ向かう。会場では厳かな雰囲気の中、一人一人名前が読み上げられるので、呼ばれたら前に出ていき、学部長と笑顔で握手をする。礼ではないのが海外ならではで日本とは違うところだろう。また、角帽の房(タッセル)の向きには実は意味があり、卒業証書を受け取った後に右から左に移動をさせる。大学時代も角帽、ガウンを着て卒業式を行ったが、そんなことをした記憶はない。その後、個人毎の卒業記念写真を撮影する。卒業式の後は大学キャンパスで友人達と記念写真の撮影会だ。20年経った今ではキャンパスや街中に写真映えするオブジェなども置かれているようだ。英国にも色々な大学があるのであくまで一例でしかない。ただ、私にとっては英国大学院の卒業式は伝統と格式を感じられるもので、生涯忘れられない特別な思い出となっている。
*What Is a UK Graduate School Graduation Like?
I earned my master’s degree in the UK over 20 years ago. Since information about UK graduations is limited, I’d like to share my experience. Unlike Japan or the U.S., where master’s programs usually last two years, UK programs typically take one year—starting in September and ending with the thesis submission the following September. However, the graduation ceremony isn’t held immediately, as theses need grading. It usually takes place in July of the next year.On graduation day, students collect and wear their gowns at City Hall, then walk through the town toward the ceremony venue. Each graduate's name is called, and they walk on stage to shake hands with the dean—a custom quite different from Japan’s formal bowing. After receiving the diploma, the tassel on the cap is moved from right to left, symbolizing graduation.For me, the ceremony was deeply traditional and formal—a memory I will cherish for life.
