私がエストニアを訪れたのは1996年なのでもう20年以上も前のことだ。イギリス大学留学中の夏休みに北欧を旅した時、フィンランドからフェリーでエストニアの首都タリンヘのOne day tripで訪れた。当時、バルト三国であるエストニアはソビエト連邦から独立して間もない時期でまだまだ貧しくとても暗い印象だった。街角には地面に物を並べただけの露店も多く並び、違法なコピーCD等の怪しい品物が普通に売られていた。あれから時が経ち、今では日本よりも遥かに進んだ世界有数のIT先進国となっていて、私の友人の大学教授も共同研究で度々エストニアを訪れている。同じ時間を過ごしたにも関わらず、その間の日本の停滞振りを思うと少し残念な気持ちになる。
さて、旅というと国や街等の目的地だけを思い浮かべるかもしれないが、実は少し長い時間の流れの中で見ると、時代も旅をしているのだ。私の好きな沢木耕太郎もエッセイの中で「現代は例えどんな離れた場所でも行かれないことはない。とすれば、現代の夢の旅とは空間ではなく時間を超えた旅、過去への旅ということになるのではないか」と述べ、ヴェトナム戦争時代のサイゴンや昭和初期の魔都上海が夢の旅だと語っていた。
私が訪れた貧しいエストニアの面影は今はもうない。その後の発展が良い悪いではなく、あの風景はその時代にしか見られないものなのだ。旅の視点に目的地という空間だけではなく時代という時間軸を加えると、何気ない旅も二度と見られないかけがえのない面白いものになると私は思う。

*Traveling Through Time, Not Just Destinations
I visited Estonia in 1996, more than 20 years ago. During my summer break while studying in the UK, I took a one-day trip to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, by ferry from Finland. At the time, Estonia, one of the Baltic States, had only recently gained independence from the Soviet Union. It was still a poor country, leaving a rather dark impression. Street vendors laid goods directly on the ground, selling questionable items like pirated CDs openly.
Since then, Estonia has transformed into one of the world's leading IT nations, far surpassing Japan in technological advancements. A friend of mine, a university professor, frequently visits Estonia for collaborative research. Reflecting on Japan's stagnation over the same period is somewhat disheartening.
Travel often brings destinations to mind, but over longer spans of time, we also travel through eras. Author Kotaro Sawaki once wrote that today’s dream journeys transcend time rather than space, exploring past worlds like wartime Saigon or 1930s Shanghai.
The impoverished Estonia I saw no longer exists. Its development isn’t inherently good or bad, but those scenes were unique to that era. Adding the dimension of time to travel enriches even ordinary trips, revealing fleeting and irreplaceable moments.
