桜島は実は交通のアクセスがとても良い。鹿児島市の中心にある鹿児島港からフェリーでわずか15分だ。だから、他の市から車で桜島港に行き、そこに車を置いてフェリーで鹿児島市内に遊びに行く人も多いらしい。私も鹿児島市内での仕事が終わった後、次の目的地に向かうために桜島を通って行くことにした。
行くまでは勝手に小さな島のイメージを持っていたが、実は桜島は大きい。島の周囲は52kmもあるので、着いてみると島という感じが全くしなかった。桜島は頻繁に噴火をしている印象だが、民家や店もありそこには火山と共に住む人々の日常があった。途中、黒神神社に立ち寄った。ここには大正の大噴火で埋没した鳥居があった。鳥居は3mの高さがあったがその殆どが火山灰で埋没していて、噴火の凄さを今に伝えていた。島の至るところには噴火の際に身を守る退避壕が設置されていて、字面では火山と共に生きると言ってもそれがどういうことかは、実際にその場を訪れないと実感としてわからない。日本であれ海外であれ、自身の常識とは違う世界を見ることはとても重要だと思う。

Sakurajima is surprisingly easy to access. It’s just a 15-minute ferry ride from Kagoshima Port, located in the heart of the city. Many people even drive from nearby towns to Sakurajima Port, leave their cars there, and take the ferry to explore Kagoshima City. After finishing my work in the city, I decided to pass through Sakurajima on my way to my next destination.
