*プラハの天文時計を訪れる多くの観光客を見て感じた平和な一時
チェコのプラハは私が最も訪れたいと思っていた街の一つである。中世ヨーロッパに憧れがある私としては、プラハは中世の美しい街並みが保存されていることから是非訪れたいと思っていた。
現在はチェコ共和国となっているが昔はチェコスロバキア共和国だった。私は1992年の夏にアメリカに語学研修に行ったのだが、そこにはチェコスロバキアからの学生も多く来ていた。そして、その翌年の1993年1月にチェコとスロバキアが分離をした。そのことが彼ら彼女らにとって良いことか悪いことかはわからないが、そこで出会った友人達の顔を思い浮かべると、国々の再編を繰り返している複雑なヨーロッパの歴史が少しだけ身近なものに思えた気がした。
さて、プラハの観光名所としては、旧市庁舎塔の天文時計が有名である。天文時計とは時刻に加えて太陽や月、惑星の位置がわかるもので、プラハの天文時計は15世紀に作られたものだ。仕掛けが動き出す時刻には観光客が集まり、時計の周りで見学をしていた。私がプラハを訪れた時はイギリス大学院留学中のイースター休暇の4月。気候も良くて旧市街広場には多くの観光客が訪れていた。私は過去の歴史や友人の顔を思い浮かべながら、今の平和な雰囲気を前に何となく穏やかな気持ちを感じていた。
*A Peaceful Moment Watching the Tourists at Prague's Astronomical Clock
Prague, Czech Republic, has long been one of the cities I most wanted to visit. With my admiration for medieval Europe, Prague's beautifully preserved medieval architecture made it a must-see destination. While it is now the Czech Republic, it was once part of Czechoslovakia. In the summer of 1992, I went on a language study trip to the U.S., where many students from Czechoslovakia also attended. In January of 1993, the country split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Though I am unsure whether this separation was good or bad for them, thinking of my friends from that time made the complex history of European nations feel a little closer to me. One of Prague’s famous landmarks is the astronomical clock on the Old Town Hall tower. Built in the 15th century, it displays not only the time but also the positions of the sun, moon, and planets. Watching tourists gather around the clock, I felt a sense of peace as I reflected on history and my friends.
